  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Good morning,

I am a divorced, white male, I was with my previous wife for 10 years. We were both raised Catholic however were married by a Justice of the Peace, not by the church.

Recently I have begun to date a woman who is Syrian Orthodox. Her faith is important to her, as it should be.

My question is would we be able to marry (would they accept my divorce status)in a Syriac Orthodox church. Would I need to convert? I am aware that divorce is a sin, but due to the different religious backgrounds - would it be possible for us to pursue a relationship together that could lead to marriage?

Any insight or informationis much appreciated.

For some reason you didn't follow the rules of the Catholic Church regarding marriage. Your faith must not have been important to you then. Has anything changed with your understanding of your faith since then?

As to what the Syriac Orthodox Church would allow or not allow, you would have to find a Syriac Orthodox priest and lay it all out and ask them. Since your forum status says you are a Catholic, you might also want to lay it all out and ask a Catholic priest.
