I often hear people say are you dividing the word of God correctly. It never really dawned on me before but some people actually divide up the word of God something along the lines of, the OT is only for ethnic Jews, only Pauls's writings are for Christians, and the Gospel of Mathew is for Jews only. That is a rough description of what I am starting to see and understand.

First let me say I DO NOT agree with dividing the word of God at all, THe NT helps us understand the OT and vice versa. And frankly, that seems racist !! We need all the scripture to understand scripture in itself. Yes, I do get the cultural differences and to me, that's just not a big deal or important.

Do you divide the word of God? What does the scripture say? I can't find anywhere in scripture that it says to divide the word of God, God brings unity and so does his word not division.

2 Timothy 2:15
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
2 Timothy 3:16
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,

I first heard that term about twenty five years ago and it struck me that it was tailored to provide a minimalist interpretation of what was required of a Christian. At lease for whomever it was that was "dividing" it. I have never found any merit to the idea at all.

Rightly dividing the word is in scripture. The way I heard it taught was the OT was the NT concealed and the NT was the OT revealed. Paul instructs
2 Timothy 2:15
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rjghtly dividing the word of truth.

The word used for rightly dividing (Orthotomeō) is a compound word that carries the meaning of a right or straight cutting…. Hence, rightly dividing.

It’s intrinsic nuance is a single or accurate rendering or handling, all other ways are wrong.

Everybody divides the Word of God …the question becomes, is it rightly divided or not.
