  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Great movie! Super intense from the moment you sit down. Has a bit of everything - action, drama, some dark humor, and a seamless mix of documentary/cinematic styles. Also has some social commentary in there, but it's not in-your-face and doesn't get in the way of just being a great film.

Good stuff. If you're a sci-fi fan, or, really, just someone who likes movies, I highly recommend it.

I wonder if/when District 10 is coming out?

While this is Blomkamp's first full-length directing job, he has done a couple shorts in the past, usually with Peter Jackson. If anyone recalls the live-action Halo 3 shorts, that was him, and for what it was, it was done fairly well. District 9 should prove to be a success for him.

I've seen pretty much everything this year and District 9 is by far the best film so far and anticipated.

After the unmitigated awfulness of Wolverine, Christian Bale grunting his way through the pathetic Terminator 4 and the other wise decent Batman, District 9 comes out of nowhere and stars an unknown performer ad libbing his lines and manages to be thrilling, thought provoking and genuinely unique.

On a lighter note, did anyone else enjoy recognising the HL2 gravity gun used by the alien exo suit?

Are you joking? The social commentary could hardly have been more confronting. The writer and director wrote this with his experiences under apartheid law in mind.

Hopefully, never.

i heard this was good except it has holes in the plot...
It presents an unreal situation as plausibly as possible and doesn't try to fill in all the knowledge gaps. I'm unaware of any plot hole that you could notice while watching it or that would affect your enjoyment of the film. This isn't like Terminator 4.

No, I'm not joking. The social commentary is there, but it doesn't get in the way of your enjoyment of the film. Exactly like I said. There are some movies out there that push social commentary so hard you just keep wanting to scream, "OK, I get it, can we get on with the story now?"

The whole freakin movie got in my way of enjoying it...I nearly fell asleep in the theater. To say that is was "super intense from the time you sit down" is just a big fat lie..even my boyfriend, who did like the movie, said that it did have a slow start. It was a HUGE disappointment.

OK, I guess I generally agree with you on that.
I would say that while the social commentary is extremely overt, it doesn't try to push a moral position on you which I'll agree many films.

Just by way of calibration, what action movies have you enjoyed recently?
It was a HUGE disappointment.
Was is hyped up much in the States? I went into the film knowing nearly nothing about it and with no expectations I was blown away.

We obviously have different definitions of "intense", and based on several posts of yours I've read, very different tastes in movies. Are there any movies you DO enjoy?

I loved this movie. Very few sci-fi movies are able to make me feel like "this could really happen" but I genuinely felt like this could be something going on in South Africa right this very moment. I also thought the story wasn't too predictable, I had no idea what was going to happen to the main character for a good chunk of the movie and I like how things were left really open for a sequel. Can't wait!

The ones that don't suck:p Actually, overall, I'm not a huge movie fan so there really aren't a lot of movies that I do like. I loved Inglorious Basterds, Boondock Saints, all the X Men movies, Star Trek, The Green Mile, The Crow, The Dark Knight...I also like Finding Nemo, Cinderella and Steel Magnolias....I have no idea what my movie taste is other than random.
