Welcome to Study 2. We had a few participants in the previous study (Genesis 1:1-25). If this is your first time, I encourage you to check out the first study, read it and answer the questions first before going to the next.

The rules are the same. Only answer/discuss the questions provided and only based on the passage (don't add what the passage does not say). There is a little bit of room for some digressed discussion but try and bring it back to the questions as best as possible and keep in it context. Also, I would request that Christians do not participate in this study.

The idea is we want natural discovery of the bible based on what the passage says not what outside sources say (commentaries, books, your barber, etc..) Since we all are coming from different perspectives we may have all kinds of ideas about the passage, which are welcomed, but if we use the passage to keep us accountable, rather than a million of other sources, then we can all agree on what it is saying (or not saying).

here are the Studies thus far, remember to go through them in order, the threads can still remain active if people are still interested in discussion

Study 1 (Genesis 1:1-25)
Study 2 (Genesis 2:4-24) ⬅ you are here

Study 2
Creation: God creates humanity
Genesis 2:4-24 ESV

Step 1: Read the story
Read or listen to the following passage

The Creation of Man and Woman
4 These are the generations
of the heavens and the earth when they were created,
in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens.

5 When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, 6 and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground—7 then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. 8 And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 And out of the ground the LORD God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

10 A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12 And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Cush. 14 And the name of the third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

18 Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” 19 Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said,

“This at last is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of Man.”

24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Step 2: Retell the Story
Take a few moments to retell the story in your own words. You may want to speak it out loud, or write it down. If you find you are struggling to remember it, read or listen to it again.

Step 3: Discover the Story
When you feel that you are familiar with the story, take some time to think over or discuss the following questions

The Questions: (what you answer)
  1. What does this story tell me about God?
  2. What does this story tell me about people?
  3. If this is really God's word, what changes would I have to make in my life?
  4. Who am I going to tell?
the last question may be left for personal action, but if you've concluded Study 1 consider doing your own study. Get a few people, follow the content of Study 1 and ask the questions remembering to stick to the passage (and questions) and see what you discover from the text.

With this study ideally, quote the questions and answer them in your post, then allow discussion of these answers and how they relate to the passage.

1. What this story tell me about God is that God is the Life Force of everything and is inherent within all of Creation.

2. What the story tells me about people and in fact all of Creation is that every bit of it from the smallest atomic particle to the largest Cosmic form is an activity of God and every bit of it is Sacred.

3. The changes I have to make is to treat other Human Beings as an activity of God and the each Soul is Sacred.

4. Who do I tell? Those who will listen.
