Ah, the infamous disc read error, if you have a Ps2 you will get one sooner or later. My problem wasn't the lens itself, but it was the magnets that were weak.

No one can get away fromt he fact that the PS2 is cheap peice of krap. If anyone out there wants to buy one, go for the PS2 slim.

I just finished opening my PS2 and cleaning the insides and the lens. Now it works great.
Investing in one of those lens cleaning CD's is a good way to go. The lens is really the only thing you need to keep clean within the unit.

I have one of the very first PS2s and mine has worked like a champ. Not a single problem other than it's obviously getting old and beginning to chug along a bit more slowly at times.

My Xbox on the other hand, which I bought later, more or less died on me. No amount of cleaning will save it. It works with some games, but not others.

Is it an older Xbox? Some of them are known to have over heating problems. Over heating can cause the system to lock up (xbox being much like a PC) with the more intensive games at the least. Use a can of compressed air inside the unit and then clean the lens and all that. Make sure the unit is well ventilated; some of the older xbox's tend to melt. You definitely do want to keep the Xbox clean in this case. PS2's are less problematic with overheating. Other than that you may want to stick a wafer fan onto the system and see if that helps. Once the system gets to a certain temp it will quit working or damage (if it's not already).
