The Diocese of Jefferson City, Missouri, will implement a formal ban this week on the singing of certain contemporary hymns at Mass because of doctrinal inaccuracies in their lyrics as well as a blanket ban on music by three Catholic composers who have been accused of misconduct.

Jefferson City appears to be the first U.S. diocese to formally align its music practices with guidelines issued by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) in 2020, which laid out a list of problematic hymns, faulting many of them for falling short in their presentation of the Church’s teaching on the Eucharist.

In a decree dated Oct. 24, Bishop W. Shawn McKnight listed a dozen commonly used but “doctrinally problematic” Catholic songs that will be “absolutely forbidden” in the diocese after Nov. 1.

They played that song a lot when I was in college, both during student masses and during the daily Mass at the monastery.

In the diocese of Lincoln, NE, where I live, it is almost never played.

Thanks be to God!

Some of those hymns are just grating.

Agreed. Many of those hymns are stuck in the 1970s. They aren’t exactly inspirational or theologically sound.

Bring back the Gregorian chant and some latin, in my humble opinion. It's much more spiritual and uplifting :)

I don't recognize them except All Are Welcome. I don't know if "Bread of Life" is the same as "I Am the Bread of Life" that is sometimes sung at funerals. I like the latter one, even if it's modern.
The only ones I recognize (by name) are All are Welcome Here and Table of Plenty.

That's actually refreshing to see. At one time I debated that we should get rid of the songs that were written by a couple of people that openly support gay marriage and similar things - same guys as what's discussed here accused of mis-conduct I believe.

My argument basically was we shouldn't use music to "worship" God that was written by people that openly reject Him. The cantor and the priest both told me to go away basically.

Probably because it was not your place. Looks like the proper people were already working on it as we can see now.

You’re 100% right. Tired of these people infiltrating our churches.

We can thank Vatican II for much of it.
Amen!

Do you go to the novus ordo or the traditional Latin mass, by the way?

There is no Latin Mass in my area so I go to the Novus Ordo.

Same. Although I attended a Latin Mass about five times in my city.

Same here, too. No Latin Masses anymore. (All but a couple, far way from me, were shut down 11/1/23.)

But I must share something fantabulous! (For those who aren't offended by the Latin Mass  )

I turned on YouTube last nite, to suddenly find myself 'entered into' this scene:

(Fast Forward to about 1:30:00, and Holy Communion begins.)

The congregation receives communion kneeling at the altar rail, where linens have been placed. (1:38:00)
The music is outstanding. When I am in that music, my heart just soars towards God.

I know this means very little to those that don't like the Latin Mass ...
but for me, last nite ... on a big screen tv ... this was such a gift!
( YouTube!)
