In the old days, scales contained springs. You would put the object you wanted to weigh on the scale, and that would depress a spring, a little for a light object, a lot for a heavy object. You remember.

The problem with spring scales is that they were always wearing out/breaking. Springs are delicate--think of a Slinky. Every Slinky I ever got was shot by the end of the first day I had it. It's just something about springs. They're, like, easily deformable.

But nowadays, we have DIGITAL SCALES. So, my question to you is, do digital scales have springs?

The main difference between an analog and a digital scale is in processing and display. Analogue scales indicate the resulting measurement of weight using springs. There is not much of signal conditioning with analog scales. On the contrary, digital scales have inbuilt processors and signal conditioners. These circuits transform the force exerted by an object or a particular mass into an electrical signal. The outcome is the weight measurement recorded on an LCD display in digital format.

Lots of info out there ... go google it ;o)

But the problem with digital scales is that they work well at room temperatures, but tend to give small readout errors under extreme weather conditions. Heat also effects electrical resistivity. Also mechanical scales are the top choice for heavy weights in tons.... but digital scales work well enough for the average user in the average setting...
