Digital Rebel Question

I've (almost....maybe...probably...hee hee hee) decided that when I get a digital SLR camera, it will be a Digital Rebel. I'm currently seeing two difference versions out there that I'm considering. One is les expensive an dhas around 8 megapixels, and the other is more expensive and has 10. I'm not a professional, but I wouldn't mind getting (close to) professional quality shots, so I guess you could call me a serious amateur. Since I've always heard that more is better when it comes to the number of megapixels, I've been planning on getting the one with 10. Can anyone tell me if doing so is going to make a huge difference in the quality of the pictures I take? I'm not really interested in portraits or shooting weddings or anything; I'm more about animals, and nature, and scenery, and candids, if that makes a difference. Any advice would be appreciated, and if anyone thinks I'd be making a huge mistake in getting the Digital Rebel at all, then feel free to chime in.

The 10 MP Digital Rebel XTI is, to me, probably the best affordable SLR on the market. The picture quality is spectacular, the focusing is practically instant, and with some good lenses and a good sense for taking pictures, your results will not just be close, they will be professional quality.

That's exactly what I was hoping to hear. I've had lots of people tell me that the Rebel is the way to go (since I don't want to spend $3000 on a camera), and I'm glad to get more confirmation!

Oh man I really like that 10mp rebel. I have the 8mp rebel and I loove it, it's a great camera. I played around with the XTi in the store a couple weeks ago and even compared to my rebel it's noticeably faster, it also has 9 point focusing and mine only has 7 point focusing which is great but i think that those 2 extra points would come in handy.

I highly recommend a canon digital rebel for the price and quality!!!

Some of the professional photographers I exchange information with on another forum have some not-so-good reviews of the new 10 mp Drebel. Choose wisely. More megapixels does not necessarily mean better image quality. A few have bought these cameras as a third backup body, etc. and returned them.

I'm a Nikon shooter, so I'm just passing along information. You may want to wait just a little longer to see what other reports come out. The 10 mp body is still somewhat new.

I've been looking at Nikons, too, actually, but I can't seem to find one for under $1,200. That's probably a little more than I'll want to pay.

Ah, the Nikon vs. Canon rivalry...additionally, you may hear that the XTI is cheaply constructed, but that is not true. What is true is that a comparable Nikon costs far more.

One more thing about the XTI, any focusing issues with the previous Rebels were fixed. This thing focuses instantly; I'd estimate in half a second.

This is an interesting debate...I didn't know there was an actualy rivalry between Canon and Nikon cameras!

There is indeed a very large rivalry between Nikon and Canon cameras, and their respective owners of course. I think Nikon makes an excellent camera, but Canon offers more features and more megapixels (with means better quality) in the XTI for the price of a D70.

The cameras you're talking about are called the Canon 350D and the Canon 400D here in Australia. The 350D, which I have, is a good camera, and the 400D is an improvement on this. As such, there isn't anything the 350D has that the 400D won't have. You just have to decide if the improvements are worth the extra cost. The 8mp 350D will still deliver excellent results.

I shoot with the canon Rebel XTi 10 mp with IS lenses when I'm not using a tripod and love it to pieces. For a backup tripod camera I use an Olympus e-volt 300 8mp. For the price, the quality of pictures I get from it are outstanding. ... but the Canon is my primary camera for obvious reasons.

hmm, I just noticed that I didn't answer your question. Sorry 'bout that.

To answer your question (IMHO) this time, If you're not going for the commercial shooting then you might consider saving yourself the money and going with the Rebel XT 8 MP version. You'll be VERY happy with the results you get and you can do pretty much any degree of editing and printing that you're likely to do non-commercially. I know some commercial photographers that shoot 8 MP from time to time so as a point of reference, I'm sure you'll be quite happy. The main thing is to get the lenses you'll be happy with. That's what's going to make or break your photographic experience and both camera bodies take the same lenses.

Now, if you're considering going pro at some point, you might as well get the 10 MP Rebel XTi now.

Either way, be sure to pick up some good lenses. I HIGHLY recommend getting IS lenses (Image Stabalization) lenses for shooting off the cuff (without tripod). The lenses costs 2-3 times as much ... but they're worth every penny.

Read the manual and learn the settings. You'll be happy you did.

Why would you buy a Canon dSLR body as a back-up if you're a Nikon shooter? So you can have two sets of lenses? *confused*

From the pics I've seen, Canons perform substantially better at high ISOs than Nikons. Even when comparing the Rebel XTi to the Nikon D200, the Canon has better high iso pics. To me, that's the measure of a better camera, as I'm so tired of having to use flash that ruins natural lighting. The head to head with the Rebel XTi vs. the Nikon D80 was pretty clear to me -- buy the Canon.
