  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

As long as you're looking for stills, a digital camera can pretty easily perform as well as 35mm in both low light and longer (less grainy) exposures. I suggest you look into the digital SLRs or just a nice digital camera if the SLRs are out of your price range. You certainly won't regret it!

If you DO get into astrophotography, get a seperate camera just for that. It should cost you $50 or less, so it's not a huge investment.

I'd have to agree with Buttermilk, but I think that the digital cameras right now (if you're willing to spend about $600-1000) are getting really close to 35mm quality, and as far as cost-effectiveness and versatility there's nothing like digital. With more and more places offering digital photo printing inexpensively, higher megapixel cameras for less money, and the ease of sending and posting photos online with digital.... yeah, you can't beat that. I can't see myself ever going back to film. I love the fact that with digital I can take a shot with four or five different settings to make sure I get one I like, and I can just delete the ones that didn't work and not have wasted any film.

Hmm... the only opinion I have is that with 35 mm you have to keep in mind you can't alter the pictures like you can with a digital. <-- which I'm sure you're aware of anyways. I personally have a digital right now, and I like it for the mere fact you can pick and choose which pictures you want to keep and which you do not. However, like people have previously stated, the quality is still better with the 35 mm. With the new technology out and what not, digital can be even better than 35 mm.....
have fun... good luck.

I have a Digital Rebel, and shoot cityscapes and sports news photography with it. Its all dependent upon your budget. Also, if you leave the shutter open for 4 hours, all you're going to get is streaks across the sky. Most you'll probably ever need is a 30 second to 1 minute exposure.
