Can someone explain to me what the different denominations are all about? How do they differ from one another? My church is just a Christian church, so I really don't know anything about denominations.

I would suggest going to Amazon and simply typing in denominations and you will see several books that do a pretty good job of it.

The origin of denominations is different people's interpretation of Scripture and starting their own church. This would include people who do not give their Church a name. You are correct that Christ's true Church is not a "denomination."
