  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Ok I fell in love with a guy last summer. We held of from each other, ie didnt get together, because i wasnt a christian. Anyway, with some awesome witnessing and spending a lot of time with God, i have become a christian.

The problem is know we are both at different stages in our walk with God. The guy i love, we are still not together,is baptisit, same as me, but we have slightly diffferent veiws. He is quite charasmatic, i havent put in enough time yet to understand that side of things.

What i want to know is, if all the fundementals are there... ie God/Jesus is our saviour and what we are seeking and we both love him more than each other, then is it ok to differ on other things?

I just love both him and God so much and the last thing i want to do is hold back someone so open from God or stop this guy being open to God. The guy says it is fine and he loves me and that we work so well and can learn together and its not about where i am with God, but i cant help feeling differently.

I keep praying about it but being a new christian im not really sure how to listen to God correctly. This is drivin me mad as these are two very important guys in my life...any ideas or experience?

Thank you in advance.

lots of love

Simply put, you're making a huge deal out of what is, in reality, something not major to consider. It's tough because you feel like he's so much "better" in God and Christianity. This is common in relationships in general. But remember that you love God, you're seeking him, and there's no problem with it. As long as you don't make it a situation where he's your "mentor" in Christ completely. It sounds like you're seeking God for God, not for this guy, so let the Lord minister to you, and be open to a relationship. At least that is what I would believe about it. We're not called to find someone who is in the exact some point of their walk with the Lord.

I have been a Christian since birth (one of the born on a Saturday in church on a Sunday kids) and I can tell you that I'm struggling right now with whether I really know the voice of the Lord or not. My girlfriend is Catholic and at a completely different stage of her walk with the Lord. But that doesn't mean that our relationship is unequally yoked because in reality both of us are yoked to God, and we're following him.

I would say you're just afraid that he will seem so greatly Christian and you will feel like you're not "up to his standards", but in reality you're a daughter of the most high, and deserve the greatest the Lord has to offer. If he's not showing you that you are already a great Christian just because you stepped forward and accepted Christ then it is to his dis-credit.

I guess where im coming from is a conversation we had about speaking in toungues. He wants to be able to share that with me. He also says how he gets words and or images from God and would want to share that with me too but as i dont know what i believe on that yet, im not sure how i can share. p.s he hasnt discredited my being a christian, he just forgets how new i am to it all (two months compared to 12 years!!)

what does he mean by 'share' that with you?

does he mean talk about his experiences?
or
does he mean where you and him are praying together in tongues?
or
does he mean where you go to charismatic prayer meetings together every week with other charismatics?

if you are uncomfortable with people praying in tongues then they should respect that and not pressure you about it. it is not a common thing to pray in tongues or to sing in tongues. a small percentage of all christians do so...i would say not more than 10-15%.

why is that number so low?

because most people who go to church on sunday do not get involved with other aspects of christianity...they just go on sunday and that is it. other people are more involved in church, ie., go to more church events than just on sunday, and even amongst those, they are not all charismatic.

Seekingsomething,
Well, first of all, for becoming a Christian!

I would encourage him and you to take things slowly. Both of you have plenty of time.

However, many long time Christians ask the very same questions you are asking. Many of us are not sure how to listen to God. Some people think it's important to wave hands in the air while singing praise to God, others don't feel motivated in that way. Neither one is more or less Christian than the other.

If I could listen to God as clearly as I can hear a friend of mine talk beside me, I wouldn't have made nearly so many mistakes. Honestly, sometimes I think God lets us make mistakes knowing we will come back to him sheepishly! ;)
