  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If you believe Wikipedia, Calvinist Methodism is actually a Welsh movement, which is both Methodist and Presbyterian. They don't give much on the theology, but remember that in the US, Methodism had a Calvinist branch. George Whitefield was one of the founders of US Methodism, and was Calvinist. Methodism was originally a renewal movement within the Anglicans, trying to reach the unreached, and change the people's lives. It was thus evangelistic, and also tried to educate people and improve their lives. Much of this emphasis does not depend upon one's soteriology. So it is not impossible to combine much of early Methodism with a Calvinist theology.

It would seem that it would also have something to do with Polity. As noted before the Cumberland Presbyterians are HARDLY Presbyterian theologically, but it is their Polity (ruling by Elders) that keeps 'Presbyterian' as part of their identity. It could be that Calvinistic Methodists hold to Reformed views and Reformed theology but have an episcopal (little 'e') form of government and polity which would make them more like the Methodists. There's just not much out there on them. It's hard to judge ANY congregation simply by the name or "what's over the door." Visit, talk with the Teaching Elder or Ruling Elders of the Session, and discern if they are in the truth or not.

I was googling for a Presbyterian church in Manchester UK, and a congregation of Welsh Presbyterians showed up, but they also call themselves Calvinistic Methodists, so I just wondered if anyone knew the difference?

The Presbyterian Church of Wales is also called the Calvinistic Methodist Church, and has used both names interchangeably for quite a while. Its origins are with the Welsh Methodist revival of the 18th century. They have branches in in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Coventry and Liverpool. They're not particularly conservative, but they are very, very Welsh. See Wikipedia.
