  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This is ridiculous....

Superman is not a "Christ" figure. He's a comic book character. (and a good one at that.)

The left-wing media has no god of its own so they feel they have to make one up at every turn....

no argument from me

BTW - haven't seen you around for a while - nice to have you back. How's the new baby?

Thanks. I'm nowhere near as active here as I used to be but in and out...

The baby is doing just fine. She's 5 months old now and finally getting out of the colicy stage.

Thanks for asking...

My pastor did a series on this...sort of...'

He pointed out that all great movies, and indeed, all great stories are all in a way 'related' to the BIG STORY.

It's just one more proof that we are all aware in some way of God and the fact that we are players in the Big Picture.

I know i"m doing a lousy job of explaining the series...it was last year sometime...but hopefully you get the gist of it!

I admit that when the trailer said "I have sent them you...my only son," the idea of Superman as a Christ figure did come to mind.

Ultimately though, I have to admit that this is rather ridiculous. I like the idea of Christ figures in comic books. But Superman doesn't quite fit the bill. After all, he'd need to die and be resurrected, and in this movie, he never dies (at least not as far as I know). It's too bad too, since Superman would make a great allegory to Christ. He's a veritable boy scout: he doesn't cheat, steal, or lie. I'd rather Superman be Hollywood's allegory to Christ instead of the guy from The Matrix.

I've heard people talk about the analogies between The Matrix and Christ. But since I've fallen asleep every time I've tried to watch the movie - I can't speak to that.

I can't help but wonder though -how much of that is intentional, i.e "I have sent them you...my only son."

As some of you know I'm a big hockey fan. Earlier this year Reebok had a commercial featuring their top new player, Sidney Crosby. Through out the commercial, over pictures of a backyard rink, a public rink - he speaks of some of the things he experienced and/or missed growing up (ie. getting up at 4:00 a.m for early morning games, missing holidays with the family to play in Europe). Anyhow - at the end of the commercial the words "I Am" come up on the screen - to be followed by "what this has made me" (or something to that effect). While I understand what the commercial was trying to say the use of "I Am" offended me greatly. I can't help but wonder - was it intentional on the part of Reebok? Was the wording intentional or just coincidence?

I don't know if i think that the wording in the Reebok commercial was intentional, but it certainly is a disgusting attempt to appeal to people's pride and self-absorbed individualistic mentality in order to sell a product. They were probably just looking for something to the affect of "Just Do It".

I agree though, that it is still very offensive...

Erin

PS: I also fell asleep during the Matrix movies! At least the last two anyway. What a snore-fest!

The creators of The Matrix intentionally put in a few parallels. For example, Neo is betrayed by one of his friends. He is killed by his enemies, but is then brought back to life, and now has the ability to transcend and control the Matrix (in the same way that Christ overcomes the world and its sin through his death and resurrection). Obviously the parallels are incomplete. And they also created allegories to other religions. For example, the idea that the world is an illusion comes from the pagan religion of Hinduism. It's a doctrine alternatively called Maya or Prakriti. In any case, I thought that the movie was somewhat interesting, simply for the fact that it represents an unbeliever's understanding of the Gospel (though I may be wrong to assume that the creators of The Matrix are unbelievers). This helps me in relating the Gospel to non-Christians.

I had a slightly different experience. I liked the second one, simply because it built quite a bit of anticipation for the conclusion. The third one started out all right, but turned out to be quite the downer when it ended with an anticlimax.

But it had some cool fight scenes.
