I know the Virgin Mary was (at least according to the Bible) a virgin when she gave birth to Jesus. How a virgin can have a child aside, did she die a virgin? Becuase, you know, she was married and (hopefully) in love with Joseph, and I'd find it hard to believe they didn't "get it on" at least once.

Nope. She was only a virgin when she had Jesus. Jesus had four (recorded) brothers and at least two sisters. [bible]Matthew 13:55-56[/bible]

PS It is good practice to read your bible daily. Read Psalm 1 for why.

Mary was ever virgin. The dogma of the Immaculate Conception declares this infallibly.
This has been the belief and understanding of the Church since the begining of Christianity. Mary even told Bernadette that she was the Immaculate Conception.
Assuming that you truly meant "ever virgin", who are the brothers and sisters that Jesus had? He had to have some (Matthew 13:55), and you only get brothers and sisters through your mom/dad. She was a virgin when she had Jesus, but did not abstain from her husband afterwards. But that's just Scripture.

This might explain the Church's position.

HI there!

This argument could go on forever... it just depends on what denominational response you get... and since this isn't a denominational board, forget about reading denominational answers as you have already received.

In catholicism, Mary, the mother of Jesus was considered to be ever virgin and according to their "traditional" teachings, she had no other children and those brothers and sisters mentioned in the Bible were step children, the children of Joseph and his first wife. None of that can be documented in historic records.

And for the record, in Catholicism, Mary never died, but was assumed into heaven, again, a traditional teaching of the Roman church.

On the other hand, Protestants, not accepting traditional teachings, but accepting the Bible, take the literal translation that the brothers and sisters mentioned in the Bibler WERE other children of Mary and Joseph.

In judiac teachings, it is a requirement for couple to have consummated their marriage else it is nul and void, having never occurred. It is considered a serious transgression for a woman to withhold herself from her husband. Mary was the mother of Jesus, but she was also a Jew, and she either had sex with her husband or she lived a lie in front of her family, her synagogue, and her community.

Take which ever side you chose to pick... this argument will continue until Christ returns.

The Church does not teach that Mary never died. They simply do not say if she died or not. It is true that the Church teaches that she was assumed, but tere is no consensus on whether she died or not.

And for the record, Catholicism teaches that Mary was assumed at the end of her earthly life.

She remained a virgin forever. The Bible never says she was married, only betrothed. If you notice, when Jesus gave Mary to John to be cared for, she couldn't have had other children, else under the law, they would be the ones to care for Mary! But since John was given the task, Mary musn't have had children.

Monica, what does "assumed" mean? Is that like "translated"? Or caught up to Heaven?
I'm woefully ignorant re: teachings of Catholic church, so would appreciate a definition.

Yes, it means she went up to Heaven. And, don't worry, the majority of Christians in the world, including millions of non Roman Catholics, believe in the assumption, if not dogmatically so.

No, Mary and Joseph had 2 sons, Jesus' 1/2 brothers.

No no, Joseph had two at least 2 sons. They were older than Jesus though. If Mary was a Virgin at the time of Jesus' birth, they couldn't be from her!

God is able to create life whever He choses, even using the dust of the earth to form the first man, Adam. As for "getting it on", that was not the reason for the virgin birth. It was so that Jesus would not inherit the sin and death nature that all regular men receive as inheritance from Adam, the first man. Jesus represented the Adam that obeyed God, and He led a sinless life so He could be the passover lamb and perfect spotless sacrifice for all the sins of mankind forever. No man has ever been able to keep the law and be perfect before God except for Jesus, and that was because He had the nature of His Father - the Holy Spirit, instead of man through Adam.
My personal belief from scripture is that Mary was and is to be honored above all women for carrying the Son of God in her womb, but as far as "getting it on goes", we don't know nor is that the subject of the scripture to focus on. It is God's plan to save for Himself a family of people that love Him and accept His salvation.

"Questions by Non-Christians" is not the place for Catholic-vs-Protestant debates.

What we all do agree on is that Mary was a virgin when she became pregnant... that God made her pregnant through a miracle:
