  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Did NASA help save the world?

At a time when Trumps administration is focusing NASA away from studying the one planet that we know has life(some possibly intelligent) because of those awkward environmental truths that get in the way of asset stripping the planet for profit(I’m not biased, except in regard to thinking clean air and drinkable water is a good thing)

I just thought about how NASA helped to confirm the hole in the ozone layer, and how rather than waving arms and doing nothing countries were able to work together to help alleviate the problem.

I love astronomy and the study of space. I'd like to continue looking at getting a man to Mars. And the Space Force doesnt sound to far-fetched to me, as the bigger threat is an asteroid or comet headed our direction in the future and some type of defense would be worth the money.

The space force is nothing more an aim to accelerate the militarisation of space. It’s a big money pit. I agree on tracking asteroids, I think mars is a suicide mission, the future of space exploration is automated. But a core mission of NASA should be collecting data on the state of the one planet in the universe we know is inhabitable.

I think, in line with your thesis, "presently" should be inserted in front of "inhabitable".

You act like Obama didnt gut NASA

That's because he didn't

NASA funding under Obama was basically static, at about .5% of US federal funding. NASA funding was a peak of $20.3 billion (inflation adjusted) during the Obama years, and a low of $17.2 billion with an average of about $18.6 billion p/a.

In comparison to his predecessors, NASA funding over the totality of the president's term was marginally lower under Bush, by about 3%, and marginally higher under Clinton, by about 7.5%.

So no, Obama didn't "gut" NASA. Funding improved during Obama's tenure, but only marginally - certainly not as much as I'd hoped it would.

From Reuters “The space agency’s budget would grow to $19 billion in 2011 under the proposed budget released on Monday, with an emphasis on science and less spent on space exploration.”. So he refocused NASA to science, than the far costlier space exploration, send people to mars. The fact is overall he did not but NASA but changed its focus.

I think the term you're referring to is: crisis management.

Scientists start fires, then put them out, making themselves look efficacious.

We should be more like the antiscience types, and do nothing ever. Got it.
