Did anyone else want to be a Meteorologist?

i live in FL and you we got tons of hurricanes i love learning more about them some day i think i want become a storm chaser

Firenze, I am almost embarrased to say that when I was 8 years old, I would watch the weather Channel and then draw up my own weather maps and do presentations for my parents!

They thought for sure that I would be a Meteorologist!

Last year I started taking a meteorology class in college, but I went through a bad spell of chronic migraines and had to drop a couple of classes—and that was one that I dropped it. But I plan on trying it again in the fall.

Last evening when I was biking I observed some altocumulus castellanus rising on the southwestern horizon. http://www.wildlandschool.net/curric/quiz/clouds/Altocumulus%20Castellanus.jpg I thought it might be a sign of thunder coming. This morning it was thundering.

Picture this: I served as a weatherman in the defence forces and now I study theology --> so after I graduate I will probably look for a job as a weather prophet..!

I used to really want to be a meteorologist when I was young. But then I developed an extreme fear of storms and natural disasters. I could never see myself doing that, now.

This topic really grabbed my eye because it instantly reminded me of my childhood (I had to post!) I may be the only dork here who ever actually owned The Weather Channel Textbook. It was available for a short amount of time in the early 90s (93-94), and it was incredibly informative. I was 10 and 11 at the time, and it was much better than watching the forecasts over and over. I was so thrilled by it, and it really brought me into learning. It was from this that I bought many of the early videos they used to offer, like the classic "Target Tornado". I used to be obsessed with TWC! Matter of fact, it's difficult for me to fall asleep without it as my "white noise" in the background (even to this day haha!). I used to always want to be a meterologist, but it was difficult for me to find a local school that offered such a program! So sad...

You just reminded me of something I used to do as a child! Back before the nutty hurricane season of 05....I remember the season of 1995. I had a map on my wall, and had tracked EVERY SINGLE HURRICANE OF THAT YEAR with little map pushpins into the map. Unfortunately, the pins went into my wall at the time, and they are still all over the place to this day. It was one active year alright! It was so fun though...here I was...barely 12, and I had a preference as to how I prefered to read barometric pressure (Inches for normal forecasts, millibars for hurricanes and tropical systems). I was such a dork haha! I loved it though..it spawned my passion for Mathematics

I am a meteorologist and a storm chaser...sadly to say to all you Twister fans; that movie is very unrealistic and has little to do with actual meteorology or storm chasing. Still an amusing movie to watch, though!!!

I started to learn about weather and still is very interesting to me. I was glued to the weather too, mostly all the time during the summer. I got interested in weather during a tornado warning in 2001!

Oh I so should have been a meteorologist!!! I've always been fascinated with weather and storms and watching how they work and move. My wife teases me that I'm about the only nut in the country that will sit and watch the weather channel for hours and hours during a springtime tornado outbreak.

Man, I used to think I was the only kid who was obsessed with weather! I used to sit in front of the Weather Channel for hours at a time if severe weather was coming..haha.

When I was at the National Severe Storms Conference in Norman, OK this past week, I realized I had made the wrong career choice and I should have gone with meteorology.

The director of the Storm Prediction Center had given a presentation on (of all things!) severe weather in Oklahoma, and I was sharing some observations I had made of severe weather in Texas, Kentucky and Indiana. Last summer, I drove through a tornadic high-precipitation supercell in Louisville, KY which had dropped a tornado in Scottsburg, IN just ten miles to the north when it passed through. I was fortunate enough to get pictures which detailed the structure of the storm.

Anyway, I mentioned that if I had to do it again, I'd go ahead and become a meteorologist, and he asked, "Well, what's stopping you?" I'm 52, and changing careers at 52 seems pretty silly -- and once again he asked, "Well, what's stopping you?"

He's got a point. It didn't matter how technical the conference got, I was able to keep up with it and keep contributing questions and I felt like I was in my element.

I could see myself doing severe storms forecasting and loving it. Frankly, it would be worth going back to school to do this.

The closest I guess I'll ever come is that I am my corporation's Disaster Alert Monitor, so I get to track storms and send reports to upper management when things look sketchy. I'm planning to attend a storm spotter class in Spring 2006.

If I had only gone to Mississippi State, when I had the chance. Although I'm married now, and it would be difficult, I could still hit that goal... Who knows?

Like the guy from the Storm Prediction Center asked me: "So, what's stopping you?"

The very last thing I want to do when I'm 75 or 80 is look back at my life and say, "If only..." because at 75 or 80, it's a little too late.

And just think pairofdivers -- if you and I both ended up at the Storm Prediction Center, we could argue politics when we weren't issuing tornado watches and tornado warnings!

Gotcha beat -- I was playing for a friend of mine's wedding in Arlington, TX, which involved an overnight stay in a hotel.

The hotel had movie channels, porn channels, television stations from all over the world, XM radio -- anything you think of, and what did I do?

I ordered food from room service and watched The Weather Channel -- specifically, I watched a cold front approach, and then move onshore the Pacific Coast in California!

I was in heaven...

I have been intrigued by meteorology ever since I was a kid when I'd jot down hurricane coordinates and plot them on my personal tracking chart. Next month, I will be graduating with a master's degree in meteorology (assuming I pass the comprehensive exam I took this week). I have started to apply for jobs in the National Weather Service. (I experimented with broadcast meteorology, but I decided it wasn't for me.)

At times, it has been a very stressful major, but operational forecasting has been my dream occupation for many years. Now, the goal is within my reach, if it is God's will.

I have don't any storm chasing per se, but I did see a water spout at the beach one time!
