  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi my friends

I was wondering if some of you here hold a devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus?

I am so ignorant. There are some things about Catholicism I still don't know. Well, I just reverted (and truly converted) to the Church 4 years ago, so I certainly do not know everything there is to know, even basic and simple things at times. Such as the devotion to the Sacred Heart.

I feel lead by the Lord to hold a devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I feel called to compassion for His bleeding Heart.

Hmmm, well, when is the Sacred Heart holy day (festivity - what is the official English name? In French "Fête du Sacré-Coeur de Jésus".) Also, from what Friday are we to start 'communing' (receiving the Eucharist) for the next 9 first Fridays? (first Friday of each month for 9 months?)

I would appreciate your help! :)

You have it correct--the first Friday of every month for nine months. At our chapel receiving Communion in Honor of the Sacred Heart is just known as the Nine First Fridays, but I recall the Promises of St. Margaret Mary being mentioned, and I believe that a devotion to the Sacred Heart includes displaying a picture in your house of the Sacred Heart--or at least that was one of the "Promises". I also believe there is a devotion called the "Enthronement of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary".

Oh yes, very much so!! The Feasts of the Sacred Heart and Immaculate Heart are back to back- Friday and Saturday after the Feast of Corpus Christi.

Check out St. Magaret MAry Alocoque (might wanna double check that spelling!) She was the one to whom the devotion was given. I'll come back and post some links!

I just love to think of His hear just burning with Love for little me! It really always makesme think of the song "Refiner's Fire"....

For general info on devotions: (**just a note- I am never quite sure about this website, the material on the links is of okay content-- but I can never quite tell if the site itself is schismatic or not)

In addition to St Margaret Mary who gave us such a great devotion as Shannon has documented. St. Gertrude the Great, prior to St Margaret Mary had a visitation of our Lord and St. John in which she was allowed to rest her head on Jesus' sacred heart.

I pulled this from http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/07163a.htm
"Allowed to rest her head near the wound in the Saviour's she heard the beating of the Divine Heart and asked John if, on the night of the Last Supper, he too had felt these delightful pulsations, why he had never spoken of the fact. John replied that this revelation had been reserved for subsequent ages when the world, having grown cold, would have need of it to rekindle its love."

You should read St. Gertrude's writings, Revelations. Beautiful! Here's a prayer by her as well.

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, fountain of eternal life, Your Heart is a glowing furnace of Love. You are my refuge and my sanctuary.

O my adorable and loving Savior, consume my heart with the burning fire with which Yours is aflamed. Pour down on my soul those graces which flow from Your love. Let my heart be united with Yours. Let my will be conformed to Yours in all things. May Your Will be the rule of all my desires and actions. Amen.

You may also find that you develop a strong devotion to Mary's Immaculate heart as well, if that was not the precursor to this devotion of Jesus' Sacred Heart.

This link will also give you some writings by Pope's, including JPII on the devotion to the Sacred Heart.

At our Holy Hour we'd say this prayer by St. Margaret Mary Alocoque. It's an Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I think it is beautiful.

I give myself and consecrate to the Sacred Heart of our Lord, Jesus Christ, my person and my life, my actions, pains and sufferings, so that I may be unwilling to make use of any part of my being other than to honor, love and glorify the Sacred Heart. This is my unchanging purpose, namely, to be all His, and to do all things for the love of Him, at the same time renouncing with all my heart whatever is displeasing to Him. I therefore take you, O Sacred Heart, to be the only object of my love, the guardian of my life, my assurance of salvation, the remedy of my weakness and inconstancy, the atonement for all the faults of my life and my sure refuge at the hour of death.

Be then, O Heart of goodness, my justification before God the Father, and turn away from me the strokes of His righteous anger. O Heart of love, I put all my confidence in you, for I fear everything from my own wickedness and frailty, but I hope for all things from your goodness and bounty.

Remove from me all that can displease you or resist your holy will; let your pure love imprint your image so deeply upon my heart, that I shall never be able to forget you or to be separated from you.

May I obtain from all your loving kindness the grace of having my name written in your heart, for in you I desire to place all my happiness and glory, living and dying in bondage to you.
