  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Last night, I was reading my Bible, and found some confusion.

My Holy Bible "UltraThin Classic" (Broadman & Holman Publishers reads: )
[sup]2[/sup]Moses summoned all the Israelites and said to them: Your eyes have seen all that the LORD did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials and to all his land. [sup]3[/sup]With your own eyes you saw those great trials, those miraculous signs and great wonders. [sup]4[/sup]But to this day the LORD has not given you a mind that understands or eyes that see or ears that hear. [sup]5[/sup]During the forty years that I led you through the desert, your clothes did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet. [sup]6[/sup]You ate no bread and drank no wine or other fermented drink. I did this so that you may know that I am the LORD your God.

Now I'm a little confused. Is this passage saying that Moses called himself the LORD?

Though on Biblegateway.com, the passage reads (v 4&5):
[sup]4[/sup]But to this day the Lord has not given you a mind that understands or eyes that see or ears that hear. [sup]5[/sup]Yet the Lord says, “During the forty years that I led you through the wilderness, your clothes did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet...
Holy Bible, New International Version®, Biblica, Inc.

I also have the Adventure Bible (NIV) but out by Zonderkids that reads the same way as though Moses is calling himself the LORD.

Is there something in these passages that I am misreading? Am I taking something out of context that I am missing? Does "Yet the Lord has not given you a heart to perceive and eyes to see and ears to hear," Imply that there is a new speaker? I kinda feel dumb at the moment, but it really appears as though the text says that Moses called himself God.

Here's NKJV:
Now Moses called all Israel and said to them: “You have seen all that the Lord did before your eyes in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land— the great trials which your eyes have seen, the signs, and those great wonders. Yet the Lord has not given you a heart to perceive and eyes to see and ears to hear, to this very day. And I have led you forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandals have not worn out on your feet. You have not eaten bread, nor have you drunk wine or similar drink, that you may know that I am the Lord your God.
KJV:
And Moses called unto all Israel, and said unto them, Ye have seen all that the Lord did before your eyes in the land of Egypt unto Pharaoh, and unto all his servants, and unto all his land; The great temptations which thine eyes have seen, the signs, and those great miracles: Yet the Lord hath not given you an heart to perceive, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day. And I have led you forty years in the wilderness: your clothes are not waxen old upon you, and thy shoe is not waxen old upon thy foot. Ye have not eaten bread, neither have ye drunk wine or strong drink: that ye might know that I am the Lord your God.

Satisfy yourself by doing the research. You're dealing with different translations. You were on the Bible Gateway site...and there you had access to several translations. Do the comparison.

Please read it again, Moses did not call himself Lord, but is talking about what the Lord did. :)

But since it's Moses speaking, why doesn't he say "so you know the LORD your God." Even with the First verse it gives the same impression.
Moses was a prophet and God was speaking through Moses telling Him what to say.

These are the words of the covenant which the Lord commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel

See that the words that Moses is saying are not his own but the ones God told him to speak
