• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If you have "the blues" and they WON'T go away (longer than a month or two), if you are lethargic, sleeping more than normal, using sleep to avoid daily activities, if you are frightened, with no apparent reason, if you are worried, and nothing can calm the worries, if you stop eating, or are eating too much, if you don't want to leave the house, or even leave your bed...

These are all symptoms of depression, with possible complications of anxiety. Depression is not something you can focus your mind upon and overcome on your own. It is not a symptom of lack of will power, or of emotional weakness. It's a PHYSICAL problem like a broken leg.

If you fell off the roof of your house and broke your leg, you wouldn't try to treat it yourself, or ignore it and hope it would get better, or listen to people tell you "it's all in your mind, snap out of it."

Depression is the same thing. It's caused by an imbalance of the chemicals in your brain that signal messages from one brain cell to another. The tendency towards depression can run in families. Stress can trigger it.

See your doctor. Oftentimes, your family doctor can diagnose and treat it with medication. If you don't respond to medication within a week or two, you might need the medication changed, and maybe a referral to some short term counseling.

It CAN be treated. And from personal experience, I can tell you, when the medication begins to work, you feel like an entirely different person. The change is phenomenal.

Peace be with you,

Good question. I had to go to a counselor to figure out I was depressed. I couldn't think. I couldn't function. I slept all the time. I didn't get excited or really enjoy anything. I didn't care. I wasn't sad or anything.
If medication ends up being one of your options, get a good doctor. It's worth it to shell out the extra cash.

What was said above, also insomnia can be a sign. Mine got really bad last year and while i'd been prone to oversleeping normally, I developed insomnia to the point that I would get about 4 hours of good sleep a night. If you have recurring thoughts of self-destructive (burning, cutting, suicide), talk to someone professional asap.

There's still quite a stigma about mental illnesses, but more people suffer than one would think. Naturally, this implies there's quite a support system out there.

If you want to talk to someone who's been through the depths of her own private hell and come out the other side, say the word and I'll give you my e-mail.
