• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I love to sing gospel songs. When the enemy tries to get me depressed I listen and sing gospel songs and that gets me happy again. I read of a gospel story, i think ezikel, where when he started to sing praises his enemies were defeated, because the lord fought on his behalf. It is also said, The lord inhabits the praises of his people. So when your feeling depressed sing praises and the enemie will be defeated! Amen.

Squirrels, it's a good idea to watch movies, too. It diverts our attention from our current problems for awhile. We all need a break from worry and problems, yes.

UnitynLove, singing Gospels songs is a great idea, too. Singing is so uplifting to the spirit.

to everyone!

Journaling is another idea.

I totally agree! I find journaling, or any type of writing for that matter, really helps. I tend to write poetry, short stories and other stuff besides just my journal.

I also love going to work. I work with animals all day and they always make me smile .

This may sound strange but sometimes even waitching a sad movie and just crying for a little bit helps. I usually feel "cleaned out" but not drained after a good cry.

Peace,
Asylum

Please post one or more things that helps you when you are depressed. It can be anything that helps you.

Thanx for starting this thread Ruth (btw - Ruth's my middle name! hehe). Hopefully, this will become a big thread, where we can really help each other.

Hmmm...spending time with friends and going out helps me sometimes; even though I don't feel like it at the time, sometimes when I've arrived back home, I feel better for it. It's taken my mind off my depressed thoughts, and by spending the day doing something, I feel I've achieved something and coped better by doing something, rather than just sitting in my room doing nothing. My housemates when I was at university made me come out with them, and wouldn't take no for an answer, when they planned day trips out, which I'm grateful for now lol. xxx

Not a massive one, but I'll post again if I can think of more xxxx

Thank you DyingAsylum, Wanttobe, and Judy02 for all the wonderful ideas for helping us with our depression.

Caring for and watching my birds is uplifting to me.

Coming here and making contact with others helps me, too.

Sometimes just taking time to relax and feel however I feel for awhile is helpful since I'm going through grief. Then when I am finished I get busy again.

Peace to you all.

-Realizing that I'm being unnecessarily hard on myself and forcing myself to think good thoughts (or simply about something else entirely).
-Reading something humorous.
-Listening to entertaining music, like They Might Be Giants
-Drawing
-Talking things out with friends
-Being silly with friends
-Wearing favorite clothes (sounds vain, but it helps when you feel like you look nice).

Thank you for providing good ideas we all can use Hikarikitkit, Shannonkish, and Battie. Sometimes when we are depressed, especially during a bad bout of it, it's hard to think of things that help. I think this thread can provoke lots of good ideas to go over whenever we need to, too.

Some things that help me:
-cleaning
-pet care
-taking a scented bubble bath
-going to the store and getting myself something special
-getting something new for my CF Character.
