• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

    If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

    If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Depression is not a disease. This will be available in the air but a hard substance.When one go to sorrowful mood, the depression will come near to that person.When the individual allow the entry it will enter into the heart.Once it enters it is difficult to go out as it is a hard substance though air.Here the individual will be convinced that what he is doing or feeling is right.Individual will feel correct to be sorrowful .When we take anything in heart,we feel right and do the things though it can be wrong.Jesus Christ can take it out with force.Individual and others can pray that the depression go out of the heart. Depression is an enemy to man kind.Fill the heart with joy or Bible verse,songs,good aims,so that nothing else goes there.

However what you've just stated should not be a reason for us to treat our fellow Christian's without compassion if they have depression or tell them that if they just try harder and have more faith that their depression will be cured. Don't be like Job's friends.

I'm depressed! Though I believe God will bring me into better things.

I am mourning the loss of my family that once was. I am mourning the slow death of this earth. I am mourning the hearts of the children of man. I am mourning the sins of this earth. I am mourning my health and my suffering. I am mourning the sins of my youth.

I have been touched by God and all this has come against me. Let it be as it says:

Let him sit alone in silence
when it is laid on him;
let him put his mouth in the dust—
there may yet be hope;
let him give his cheek to the one who strikes,
and let him be filled with insults.

For the Lord will not
cast off forever,
but, though he cause grief, he will have compassion
according to the abundance of his steadfast love;
for he does not afflict from his heart
or grieve the children of men.

~Lamentations 3:28-33

While I languish I know his will for me.

But this I call to mind,
and therefore I have hope:

The steadfast love of Yahweh never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
“Yahweh is my portion,” says my soul,
“therefore I will hope in him.”

The Lord is good to those who wait for him,
to the soul who seeks him.
It is good that one should wait quietly
for the salvation of the Lord.
It is good for a man that he bear
the yoke in his youth.

~Lamentations 3:21-27

Indeed depression can be self afflicted or brought upon us because of grieving and does not need to be an illness. However i have depression because i'm ill and cycle into depression no matter how well i guard my heart or how joyful in the Lord i am.

Sure to be joyful in The Lord keeps the deepest pit at bay but depression can become very severe nevertheless. It is true though that guarding our thoughts is very wise and some people who haven't done this in their lives can end up with depression. Such people, as you also say, only have to correct their thought patterns to become better.

For others it is not that simple. Indeed for many depression is a life long affliction that strikes time and again without warning or without the person doing anything wrong because of a physical defect in their minds or bodies, e.g. they are ill. Such people still benefit from guarding their thoughts but will nevertheless have times of depression.

Good counselling usually greatly benefits a depressed person as can medications.

Peace.
