DEPRESSION AND THE GREAT IMPOSTER
I waited patiently for the Lord;
he turned to me and heard my cry.
2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.
3 He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God. -Psalm 40:1-3
Some of the best secular depression therapists have found moderate success by separating their client/patient from what they call a 'disease'. They give a character name like the "the great imposter" to the depression to help treat the individual who is weighed down by a load of despair. With this method they can sometimes relieve the symptoms by introducing another player as a kind of "scapegoat". Now this method has some truth to it, from a worldly perspective, but does not treat the root of the problem. They still try and fight the depression with medication and various human therapy sessions. Now the patient may experience some relief from these "weapons of the world", but they will never experience true victory until they realize who this "great imposter" is and who ultimately defeated him on a hill called Calvary.
2 Corinthians 10: 3-5 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
Having gone through a SEVERE depression I know the solution. He is a man who walked and talked in our shoes. A man who experienced extreme despair and took upon himself the sin of the world. He spent 40 days in the wilderness with no food and went head-to-head with this "great imposter". He did not give up, or give in, but suffered the cross and shed his blood for our sins. The great imposter may continue to whisper condemnation leading to feelings of despair, but according to God's word we are clean in the sight of our God. The debt has been paid because the King of the Universe loved us and gave himself for us!! The empty accusations of the evil one have no power over the children of the living God, for they have been bought and paid for by the precious blood of the Lamb!!
And because He has paid the FULL PRICE we are not our own, we belong to God. NOTHING, and I mean ABSOLUTELY NOTHING (including ourselves) can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus!!
Romans 38:38-39
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Grace and Peace...
