  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It happens - that's why the Church has exorcists and a rite of exorcism. I don't know how common it is, but I suspect it's more common than we modern people think. We don't want to label all mental disease as possession, but at the same time, we don't want to let psychology take over for religion and lessen belief in the devil.

I also think this is a subject best left for those qualified to study it, since the devil will use whatever means possible to get into our lives.

I completely agree with you both. Our views of preternatural activity and possesion should not be formed by the movies. Most of the time, based on what I know, the demonic tries to conceal its presence in a soul. Possesion is rarely one demon but usually several lesser demons and one greater one, as the fallen angels still retain their ranks and heirarchal order.

Here is a link to a spritual warfare site, it is Catholic. Keep in mind that this is a very real, and serious matter, and we should not use such things for entertainment. However, information is useful, when your questions are answered I think you should move on. :)

hi plainswolf, peace be with you,

Demonic posession is actually quite rare. Demonic obsession is more frequent but still rare. In the end, the *vast* majority of evil/disordered behavior is simply due to our fallen human nature. But it is still good to be aware of how to tell the difference between someone who suffers from MPD (Multiple Personality Disorder) and demonic posession; there are certain things to look for.

Anyway, the link listed above is a pretty good one. I would also suggest "Deliverance from Evil Spirits" by Fr. Francis McNutt.

Yes, I am reading "An excorcist tells his Story" by Fr. Gabriele Amorth who was the chief excorsist of Rome. One thing that is highly beneficial to those in such state is the frequent reception of the sacraments. Utterly fascinating book! I have read a few on this subject throughout the years.

I would like to read that book once I finish reading the other books that are currently on my table.
