MTV first aired at 12:01 AM on August 1, 1981. The first video was "Video Killed the Radio Star" by the Buggles.

I remember hearing about "MTV" at school. I had my friend write the channel down on a piece of paper so I could see this for myself. I came home, turned on the TV and switched to the channel, and there was Bon Jovi! I was in love.

Wow! Music on television! It was wonderful, awesome, amazing!

Where were you when you heard about MTV? We you allowed to watch it, or did you have to sneak like I did?

I remember when it came out. I think I heard about it at school. At the time our cable provider wouldn't pick it up. We finally got it sometime around 1985 and when we did I most definately had to sneak to watch it as my dad thought all of it was "Devil Music."

I remember hearing about MTV in jr. high, but we didn't have cable so I never watched it.

My sister had it at her house on cable. My favorite was Walk Like an Egyptian. Other than that I thought MTV was a weird concept.

I remember watching when it first came on and I loved it..watched all the time!!! Liked J.J. Jackson, but not so much Martha Quinn!!!! At least back then MTV played videos...now it's full of shows and very little music...and if you have kids, you almost can't let them watch any of it...the things on that channel are so filthy most of the time

I remember when it did come out. We didn't have cable in our area so I wasn't able to watch it. I first got a chance to see it in the very late 80s because a friend of mine had it at his house.

I did watch quite a bit of it when we moved and finally got cable TV. Now I watch it sporadically because, quite frankly, the programming on it has gone to pot ...

We watched it at our house. I don't think my mom was really informed of what it was. But I have to say it was much better back then than now!

We didn't have cable at my house, so I didn't get to watch it unless I was at someone else's house. I do remember staying up late so I could watch Friday Night Videos. (that was probably a lot later than 1981 because I was only 8 in 1981)

I remember hearing about it summer 1981. One of the first (and best) videos I remember was "Tusk" by Fleetwood Mac.

We so did not have cable. I heard about MTV and was excited but didn't see it until years later.

"Footloose" - The movie where Kevin Bacon played a high school student, six years after he played a college student in "Animal House." ("Thank you sir may I have another!" was his most famous line.)

I didn't get MTV until about 1986 or so.

I used to love MTV in the 80s. It's nothing now like it was back in the day.

Yeah. Music Television was actually MUSIC Television.

AMEN to that. Then they created MTV2 so that the original channel could focus on other programming while MTV2 would be the music side. Now it's just as bad.

CMT was good but it's owned by the same parent company Viacom so it's getting to where you can't watch it either most of the time.

The only channels on DirecTV for real music are just the XM satellite channels... but those aren't videos...
