Each year, much of the world’s attention turns toward this date, which has been settled on being the date designated as the birth of Jesus. There is much fanfare, presents are given, the Rockettes are in full form at Radio City Music Hall, people attend Midnight Mass, and as an option, no “ordinary work” is performed.

Those of us who know what Christmas is, strive to live by what Jesus has told us regarding our love for God and for our neighbor. Apart from the things mentioned above, this is the true fulfilment of recognizing Christmas.

And when you think of it, the fulfillment of Christmas amounts to a fulfillment of the commands God makes in Genesis 1:3-29 which are designed to ensure that all the life He created on earth will exist until our universe is folded up into a scroll.

Only man’s ignorance can result in at least a premature destruction of himself and at worst a premature destruction of life in general. Life can go on without man under the right circumstances, but man cannot live without other life. As to the former, man has found ways to destroy himself as we have noticed in his efforts against other men and his ignorance of the environment.

Judgement is made only on man, not to the rest of life, except when man takes it upon himself to judge other life. Under God’s Commands in Genesis 1, all life has a purpose. With man, though, it is more complicated. Man benefits from God’s Purpose only when man loves God in accordance with Romans 8:28-30. It is only when man heed’s God’s calling to His Purpose that things will turn out for man’s good.

Jesus appeared on earth to relay God’s Message which includes calling our attention to God’s Existence and clarifying what He wants from us. It also informs us that for those who love God in this fashion, eternal life awaits us in His Kingdom. It also informs us that those who refuse what God wants or those in ignorance of what God wants, death is imminent, and the consequences are worse, as described in Matthew 25:41-46.

Those who are ignorant of God are worse off than those of us who are aware of His Existence, in that they won’t know what hit them if their actions run counter to what God wants. So, Jesus came to earth to ensure the Word of God is spread to all, as he implores his disciples in Mark 16:15-16.

So, while we put up our Christmas trees, decorate our homes with lights, exchange presents, attend midnight mass and watch the Rockettes perform in Radio City Music Hall, and while it seems that man is bent on destroying himself more acutely than in other recent years, let’s be mindful of what the Christmas Spirit truly is.
