  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

lol... doesn't sound too good.. lol.
well, I have had my cat de-clawed. If I wouldn't have had it done, every piece of furniature in the house would be torn to shreds. Its only done to the front claws, so I guess its ok. They're put to sleep while its done and then they're pampered for awhile so all in all I think its ok.
good luck with it all!
God bless

Yeah, both my cats were de-clawed. They seem to be fine..and they still have their back claws if they get into a brawl. It's all humane in the vet's office so there isn't anything wrong with it. But, if the cat isn't doing anything wrong like tearing up furniture, or attacking people then there's no point to the operation.

I've seen a picture of a cat once that had been declawed when it was young, and something went wrong, and his front paws never grew since then. They were visibly shorter than his hind paws... After seeing that, I will NEVER consider doing that to a cat. (Not that I was pro-declawing before that, either, but that photo was a real shocker.)

I would only get my cat declawed if absolutely necessary. There are other solutions to cat's scratching. In fact, I've heard of these little plastic/rubber things that you put on their claws which helps to prevent them from clawing. Unfortunately, it looks uncomfortable but who knows. A neighbor of mine recently got her cat's declawed. She said they were walking around funny for the first few days.

Hey Amy, sounds like the vet messed up on the operation and caused some nerve damage to me.

I'm pretty much anti-declaw, however if the home is an otherwise good home, I normally just let it slide. However, there are many other options to declawing that you may want to bring up to her. Try softpaws (or softclaws). They are basically caps that you put on a cats claws to prevent them from "hooking" and causing damage. They do have to be reapplied every so often, but it's much easier than dealing with a declawed cat. Also, simply trimming the cats nails will prevent most damage from occuring. This usually works best if the cat is used to it, some cats go bonkers if you try to trim their nails. I should probably ask why she's having it done. Has she tried teaching the cat to not claw on furniture? A simple spray of water whenever they're doing something they shouldn't usually works along with a scratching post covered in catnip. I've never had a problem with my cats clawing anything after a little bit of training.

Why does she want to declaw the cat? If it's to stop attacking her, the cat will just use it's teeth.

I find the best solution to stop cats clawing is to cover the piece of furniture with thick plastic - just a strip where they do it. Some fabrics cats don't like clawing (like wool) so consider knitting up throw-rugs. My cat does claw the furniture but we don't care because it's of fabric that doesn't catch.

I think cat declawing is a horrible act, to do to an animal, God gave that creature, those claws for a reason!! to defend itself, and to scratch itself! to have them ripped out, while they are asleep, is very cruel!! animal abuse! yes, my statement is strong, but its true, there are alot of vets who will not do it. It changes their personality, they are really never the same cat. I have a cat, shes half persian, and maine coon, very furry and beautiful shes 3, and has all her claws, i just take her to petsmart and get them trimmed. When she starts clawing at my sofa, or chairs, i squirt her with a water bottle, the mist part, and she gets the message, see, there are other ways to control this problem. I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but i really dont believe our Heavenly Father, would approve of this type of procedure. U have to remember, he created them with those claws, its part of who your cat is. Anyway, Peace+ God Bless!!

Oh yeah, I just thought I'd mention this! If your sister is having problems with her cat clawing furniture, you can get a spray that you spray on the furniture that the cat supposedly doesn't like for some reason and that will deter scratching. Another option is double-sided tape. Most cats will hate the feeling of their paws sticking to the tape and it will quickly stop the behavior.

Taking a cat's claws out is a lot like cutting of a persons fingers. They function much the same and in my opinion it is quite cruel to do so. There are other alternatives, you could do a google search for claw caps or nail caps (I've seen them both ways). I understand that sometimes we don't have much choice but to declaw our furry critters, but when there is a choice, I'd say it is better to find an alternative.

I never de-clawed my cats and never heard of this term before.. Do you do it yourself or take the cats to the vet? Usually I'd take scratches from my cats, well, I bled but it's not poisonous and I still love my cat :) I think cats use their claws for hunting and scratching things, which is their usual hunting practice.

I'd never declaw a cat! It's cruel, it's really painful for the cat, and a de-clawed cat had BETTER be indoor-only! Even then I still wouldn't do it because if that cat got outside, it's as good as dead.

De-clawing a cat for the sake of human convenience just sounds... stupid.

rented mule said:
declaw the fronts and leave the back claws. that way they can get traction if they need it. I need to get my dog de-toothed to keep him from chewing up my furnitire.
I must admit that I find the idea of de-toothing an animal repulsive, even moreso than declawing.

Funny think to mention: I read your name as "retarded mule" rather than "rented mule" lol

I have had two cats that I have had declawed. With little ones in the home, I did not want to risk the event of scratches. I had only the front claws taken out and never let either one outdoors. Roman the cat I have now, still loves to "claw" at furnature and such and never seems bothered by it.

~God Bless!

It is my understanding (and I may be wrong) that de-clawing a cat would be similar to cutting off the tip of your finger at the first joint. I have also heard it is very painful and can cause more problems down the line (for the cat). There are other roads she (your sister) may want to travel first.
