Hi everyone. I have pay television and as a consequence a 24hr Christian channel-which quite frankly I can do without. I absolutely loathe the major amounts of American televangelists with their usual hyped up clap trap money grubbing.

I was watching a little bit of David Jeremiah as he struck me as being moderate and sensible. He was preaching on giving and serving when he said this:

"The greatest sacrifice you can give to God is money". I rolled my eyes and thought "same old, same old-you see one, you see them all".

What do you think?

Sounds like the guy has a heck of a mortgage to pay! My church has a "tithing pastor"...we just ignore him when he's up on stage. We tithe and don't need to be pressured into the trap of "give more money to us and God will bless you".

MY COMMENTS: I agree that so many TVevangelists are money suckers.

As for David Jeremiah, I have heard him on the radio, and did not feel pressured to "give or you won't be blessed."

For their outreach on TV or the radio, it does cost money, so I expect them to have some asking for donations.

Even Paul during his ministry, appealed to the churches he founded for donations, and yet we read in Philippians 4:14ff that it was only the Philippian Church who had helped at the time of his writing.

"Moreover, you do ideally in your joint contribution in my affliction. Now you Philippians also are aware that, in the beginning of the evangel, when I came out from Macedonia, not one ecclesia participates with me in the matter of giving and getting, except you only, for in Thessalonica also, you send, once and twice, to my need." If that is an accurate quote, then I would say it is certainly out of line.

From what I know about David Jeremiah, he is pretty pietistic, stresses law over gospel, and probably subscribes to Lordship Salvation theology which I believe is probably heretical, but he certainly isn't in the same category the WOF "send me a thousand dollars or God will strike me dead" crowd.

Any radio or tv preaching ministry that doesn't have a pod of very wealthy underwriters behind them is going to have to ask for money from regular listeners now and then, and that's not wrong.

There are tasteful ways of doing so.

In this they are no different from NPR or PBS.

Right, and this is why you are on a talkboard asking about what others think about something a TV preacher said???

Face it dude, you're "Christ Curious" and if you keep playing around the bank, you're going to end up falling into the cleansing flood, being washed in Jesus Blood, and delivered from smokin bud...

Don't screw around and end up like Dio...he rejected Jesus as being the Christ who paid the price for his sins...and according to his own words...he's not in heaven right now (I've read several of his interviews where he publically rejects Jesus as Savior)

The greatest sacrifice you can give to God is money

More than likely he is referring to what money represents...your time, your talents, your work, your accomplishments, and the fact that in this physical world in which we live...we have to have money in order to live.

Plus, what you sow is what you reap...and wherever your money is, that's where your heart is, which means whatever you believe in...you'll spend money on.

All i know about him is my Overly Charismatic mother in law did a bible study based off a book of his about the End Times. And know she is continually telling us to quit our jobs and for me to quit seminary in order to "win souls" before Jesus returns sometine in July 2011. (She has the exact time but I cant remember.)

The Bible specifically says...only the Father knows the day that Jesus will return...so anybody, this means ANYBODY that tries to tell you what day the Lord will return is decieved!

Sure, we know the season...and I wouldn't think we have too many more years to go before this mess on earth imploads...but no man knows the day.

Your mother in law did not read that book correctly because this man is not so stupid to jump out and say this. He knows the Bible says only the Father knows the day that Jesus will return.

Sure, we should all be doing our best to win as many as possible...but don't quit your job unless God has been preparing you for full time ministry, which becomes your job.

Please tell your mother in law to quit freaking out and get a hold of herself!

I completely agree, and don't buy into it what so ever. Although i know the Lord will return someday. My wifes whole family has tried to talk her out of this and similar ideas for years but she will just say something like were not filled with the Spirit or something. Luckily this has decreased in popularity in the last few months for her. Also Luckily she lives in San Diego and we live on the east coast of Canada.

I've no problem with that, provided the pastor and his staff lead the way by outgiving anyone else in the congregation.

That was very uncalled for. Using the death of Ronnie James Dio, someone I was an obviously a fan of, as a way of exploiting an opportunity to convict me in some way. Not very tactful and very inconsiderate. I have never had any interest in the private lives of any member of any band whose music I enjoy. If they happen to profess faith in Christ, then that's great. If they don't, I still enjoy their creative outputs.

I'm not into celebrity worship but I was obviously saddenned by the loss of RJD whose music I have been enjoying literally for decades. And btw, you don't know Dio's heart and private thoughts. And you don't know his spiritual state during his last days on earth. For all you know, he could have asked for forgiveness in his last hour and accepted Christ.

Please don't judge or speculate. And don't use his death as an opportunity for some knee jerk conviction.

I think that Mr. Jeremiah was having an off day :) In general I agree. Some day perhaps a man of God will be given the power to do the opposite of very nearly all televanglism. Or perhaps the Lion will arrive first!

Leadership by example is a good thing.

It is important to give to the church, to the works of God, to the glory of God and in order to do His work on earth to spread the Gospel, to cure the sick, feed the hungry, house the homeless and clothe the naked.

I guess my biggest problem with the statement as indicated is that it reinforces the stereotypes of religion in general and televangelism in particular, that it's nothing but "fleecing the flock." And there are certainly a lot of phonies hiding behind the banner of Christ. Just the same, ministry costs money and it has to come from somewhere.

But it isn't all about money -- it's about *doing* good works and *doing* things in mission for Christ just as it is about donating money. Putting an almost exclusive focus on money not only ignores the importance of good works, but it also turns a lot of folks off by reinforcing the stereotype.

I've heard Jeremiah preach a few times and it has never struck me that his ministry is profit motivated. But I also haven't heard all the man has ever said nor am I a faithful listener. I like Jeremiah and believe he is a gentle, godly individual although I disagree with him greatly about eschatology. That's about all I can offer on this matter.

First of all, there is no reason to say that the pastor or his staff should lead the way by outgiving anyone else in the congregation. Who are you to say they should? Second of all, I used to really like listening to David Jeremiah, both on radio and television. That is, until one day he made the comment that if he found out any of the staff at his church were not tithing they wouldn't be working for him. He does not have the right to say that. It is nobody's business who gives, how much, or dictate who is worthy or not to work for or go to his or any other church. When someone in need asks for help, the church is not going to take these tithes to help anyone. This takes an act of Congress. Try getting hep in hard times from your church or any church. They want to examine you with a microscope and then still don't want to part with any funds. For this reason, I quit tithing a long time ago. That is not to say I won't help the needy, but I will do it directly, not through the phony churces. Jeremiah, I lost all respect for you when you made that comment and I will never listen to a word you have to say ever again.

I've listened to David on the radio. Enjoyed his messages. Ya, I don't agree with his end times teaching.

I think preachers that are on radio and TV find it takes so much money and its the same same amount every week, never lets up. Its just hard to have the money flow to meet a demand that air time costs, so they are pushed keep the money coming in so they can stay on the air. So I don't hold that against them. But nor to I feel obligated to give as I can't give enough to meet that demand either. If I wanted to give that much, I'd have my own radio show.
