ESV, Genesis 1:
1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2The earth was without form and void,
The dark earth was formless and empty. It was not made of baryonic molecules at this point.
and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
God created dark heavens and dark earth in the form of dark waters/matters. Photons have yet to exist:
3 And God said, “Let there be light [photons],” and there was light.
Visible photons were created. Physical space-time began. God could speak outside of time. God is not bounded by space-time.
4And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 5God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
This was not a 24-hour day as we know it today. The first day began with dark matter.
God turned the dark waters/matter earth into ordinary-matter earth. This is my speculation

Haha good thing you ended with that! I was about to say...

Fun speculating, for sure. Some interesting thoughts there.

Here is mine Genesis 1:1 God created the heaven and earth (land/ground) no mention of water.

This was home to the garden of God where satan was (i guess along with other angels). satan sinned and God cut out the lights and flooded the earth with water Genesis 1:2.

Genesis 1:3 God begins to restore the earth, this time for humanity which He will eventually create in Genesis 1:26, day six of creation/earth restoration.

Waters are mentioned in verse 2.

But not in the creation in 1:1, water comes into play in verse 2 to a form less void earth. Verse two sounds like a flooded earth creation that has been judged.

What day of the week was verse 2?

The dark earth was formless and empty.
Genesis 1:2
Now the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

Jeremiah 4:23 looked at the earth, and it was formless and void; and at the heavens, and their light was gone.

Just what was Jeremiah looking at?

The early universe was primarily composed of hydrogen and helium, with trace amounts of lithium and other light elements. The formation of heavier elements, such as carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and all the other elements necessary for the existence of stars, planets, and life as we know it, occurred later in the history of the universe. These elements were created through nuclear processes within stars (stellar nucleosynthesis) or during explosive events like supernovae.

This was not a 24-hour day as we know it today. The first day began with dark matter.
According to Schroeder, the first day was 8 billion. We are told: "1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." The universe was 14 billion years old and the earth was 5 billion years ago. The second day was 4 billion, the third day was 2 billion, and so on. This is the only way to get the events of Genesis chapter one to line up. Schroeder has a Phd from MIT in astrophysics. So you can be sure his math lines up. If there was an error in his math his students would have found it.

I believe God created the earth as a mass of seawater in the hollow of His hand.

Isaiah 40:12 Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?

Thus it was "without form and void" -- (unless you want to consider it plano-convex [lens shaped]).

There is more here than just water.

Water is a compound made up of two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom, represented chemically as H2O. It's a fundamental substance for life on Earth and is found in various forms, including liquid, solid (ice), and gas (water vapor). The origin of water on Earth is a complex topic that involves several processes:

  1. Primordial Earth: Water is believed to have been present on Earth since its early formation. As the Earth formed from the solar nebula, a mixture of gas and dust in space, water vapor was one of the components trapped within the planet's developing atmosphere.

The earth didn't "form" though.

It was created ex nihilo.

It was created ex nihilo.
In a scientific framework, the universe's initial state involved an extremely high concentration of energy, and as the universe expanded and cooled, this energy gradually transformed into matter. So, in a sense, matter as we know it emerged from a highly energetic state. This transformation is a fundamental aspect of our current understanding of the universe's early history.

"Darkness," in Genesis 1:2 KJV, regarding the days in 2Peter 3:8, "involved an extremely high concentration of energy", "fervent heat," to come forth with the Big Bang from the perspective of the third/fourth day in 2Peter 3:10 KJV, according to, "day," in 2Peter 3:8.
