I Was Raised Baptist, and I am Still a Firm beliving baptist! I know what we belive about Dancing and carrying on in the church might be a little Penticostal, I Attend a Southern Baptist Church Where on Wednesday nights We have a Praise and Worship Time With the Youth. We have a Guitar and Drums, Possably A Clarinet soon. My point is is it so worng to get into the music of praise and worship where you just want to clap and Move!

Psalms 149:3
Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.Psalms 30:11
Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness;

Just Wanted to clear up somethings, Why Do some baptist look bad on Dancing and Some Don't ?

In a 1st century Synagogue dancing was part of the service along with kissing the Torah Scrolls. The reader of the Scrolls that day would take them from the Hazaan (the caretaker/teacher of the Synagogue) and the reader for the day would parade/dance the scrolls around the Synagogue and the congregation when the Scrolls came by would kiss the Scrolls and dance.

So in Luke 4 when Jesus is teaching in the Synagogue that day...............

I think that there are 2 types of dancing. One that glorifies the body, and one that glorifes the Lord.
These days, I rarley see anyone dancing to glorify the Lord. Its more of a show for thier own glory.
I will not dance anywhere in public, but behind closed doors, I crank up the praise music and dance with the children and shout GLORY! PRAISE THE LORD!
AMEN!

When I was was young we went to a church where all dancing was bad. I honestly do not know why they seemed to overlook scripture that speaks of dancing. I think some Christians associate all dancing with the worldly, fleshy type and don't see a distinction between godly and ungodly kinds. There clearly is a type of dance that glorifies God though. I think the key is to not show off. It's good to have fun. God gave us emotions and we can use them to His glory.

Some look bad 'cause they just can't dance! LOL

But seriously, I think there are two verses that apply, in principle, to dancing.

Romans 14:22, 23
"Do you have faith? Have it to yourself before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. But he who doubts is condemned if he eats [dances], because he does not eat [dance] from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin."

I Corinthians 10:31
"Therefore, whether you eat or drink [or dance], or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God."

Of course, these verses are set in contexts that get much more detailed about how we make choices in the things that we do as it relates to loving others. Is dancing wrong? Of course not. But we must evaluate our motive and how our dancing will affect others who see it.

To paraphrase I Corinthians 13...If I can bust a move better than anyone else in the church but have not love, I am nothing.

Some Baptists think that dancing will lead to things such as sex, etc. I've never understood that, but that's the way it is!

But definitely, I dance for Jesus all the time... it's when I feel closest to Him and when I can worship Him the best!

i say it depends on the type of dance, like it was stated some dances glorify the Lord, some glorify the flesh
we also have got to be careful about how we worship (especially us youth), yes it is all about God, but we have got to remember our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ standing next to us worshiping. If what we do will distract them and get their attention off of God and onto us, and it could cause them to get upset, then we shouldn't do it. I can't stand the ideology that many of us youth have, that because we clap and dance and get all exited, we are more spiritual and are worshiping got better than the older folks because they just stand there singing (because they have worked all week earning an income so that we youth can do the stuff that we do, and be ungrateful about it).

I don't look bad on dancing
I just look bad dancing!! ^_^
seriously ...
IMHO
We're called not to be an occasion for others to stumble and fall into sin.
Some dancing is okay, but if you're doing so to be provacative to someone other than your spouse, then that would not be good. And that is what is frowned upon.

:D lol I Liked that!

Our Youth at church is really starting to get "on fire" and our Praise and Worship Time is awsome! This isn't some "shake your booty" type of dancing, this is clapping hands , Raising hands, Grab a friend on both sides of you and start a line of swaying singing "Our God Is An Awsome God". And we even Jump and get into the beat. Now I do admit, there is a song we do called "Pharro Pharro (sp) Oh Baby Let My People Go." Now A boy got up in front of the church and kinda stuck his hips out a little to much. But you could tell it was to bring attention to himself not to the Lord!

Some dancing does lead to sex. Some people go to dance clubs looking for someone to have sex with. My college classmates did this all the time. They'd go to a club or a bar looking for sex, get a little tipsy to make the men look better, then start the sexual arousal by dancing. I'm not kidding.

One of them married a man they met at a club because he was a good dancer (aka the sex was good). Then three years later when their first little one came along, they stopped going to clubs and stopped dancing. They slowly realized their whole marriage had been based on the good sex they had after dancing. They divorced and started the whole process over again, going to clubs looking for new mates. They are both on their second marriages now. Both are Christians, and have been since they were teenagers.

Why do you think dance clubs get filled up? They are full of people looking to choose a mate based on how he/she dances. That is not a godly way to choose a mate.

I think alot of it has to do with the pastors of the church. I grandpa(the pastor) doesn`t believe in dancing at all. but yet my friend down the road has a younger pastor and they even hold dances at there church. i think it`s really what the pastor believe and then the poeple in the church too because we have mostly older people in our church.
