Excellent post, just excellent! That's a super idea, and one I hadn't thought of, quite honestly. Especially with Putin's recent "show of good faith" by coming forward and being honest about the Russian intelligence they had given us about Iraq's plans to attack the U.S. I understand Bush had called the head of their intelligence personally last year to thank them.

We have much better relations with Putin than with Chirac, anyway. Oui? LOL!

Thanks, SuzQ. I don't even really believe that Putin is being, shall we say, 100% honest in his recent "information-sharing" about Iraq. He's pretty shifty. But at least he's the fun ex-spy kind of shifty, instead of the al-Qaida-harboring kind of shifty. He seems to be much more pleasant to deal with than the House of Saud. Plus, Russia is a rapidly developing market. It wouldn't be a bad idea for the US to help it along and cultivate interests there.

Stellar idea, cheat - now we just have to convince someone from the Bush admin or the Kerry campaign to visit this site. That'll be the tough part.

The other nice thing about the siberian resources is that we already have a good bit of infrastructure in Alaska or, where we don't, we have the pork-barrel politicking will to build them (they've been in talks for awhile about building an alaska-lower 48 pipeline).

Putin is, of course, pretty dicey, but maybe bringing him even further into the US economic orbit would incentivize good behavior.
