  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I tend to be a curious person. After a conversation I had the other day, I find that there are a number of Christians that feel comfortable with using curse words in conversation. The word I'm talking about is S*, but I have heard Christians using the F-bomb and are perfectly comfortable using it. For the most part the feeling seems to be that this is 2005 and it is considered perfectly normal. So now to the curious part. Is any one here comfortable using these words or do you use them and feel you shouldn't or just don't use them. I guess this is kind of a non-poll, poll. Personally, I do not use them, But I am curious what others feel.

I try not to use them... I consider them offensive in general... but I admit, they do slip into some conversations of mine at times. :(

I do not consider SH** or FU** a sin, as in taking His name in vein... but I do consider them poor manners, and dialog. It illustrates anger, frustration, etc... and those are traits we do not want to give into.

Don't know what the Biblical perspective is (anyone??) but like both of you, I try not to use them personally, although it doesn't bother me hearing it on movies and TV, or in conversation. For me it is one way of being a light in the world. I have a lot of non-Christian friends who all swear, get drunk, have sex, freely. It is very noticeable to them that I am not doing these things and they know that I am a Christian and this is part of the way that I display my faith in action, and respect me for that, and through their respect for me they come to respect Christ. Hmmm reading that back it doesn't make a lot of sense, but I know what I mean and I hope you can work it out as well, because it is late and I am too tired to try and rewrite it!!

hello,it's just my opion but we should becareful what comes out of our mouths. We need to be a light to this dark world. We do not need to be like them in any shape or form. Therefore we do not need to sound them either.Christians should have a clean vocabulary at all times as we are to be like Jesus. I know we are not perfect,but as you grow in Christ,you will get away from swearing.

there was a time in my life when those words came alot...praise God that's over with. but, the more i started reading God's word and spending QUALITY time with him i began to realize that they're just unecessary to say. it's foul language that does not please God in any way.
Evie made a really good point!! we're to reflect Christ in all we do and SAY. Jesus wouldn't say those words, therefore we shouldn't either. plain as that.

I think we have all had trouble "taming" our tongues...I certainly have. You younger folks have been born into our culture when "foul" language is spoken everyhwere casually...I can remember when it was shocking to hear it begin to come into mainstream movies.

Here is the verse I try to cultivate in my walk with the Lord...it is difficult...makes one go to the Lord a lot for grace and forgiveness at times.

It covers a lot more than "foul" language.

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. Eph. 4:29

I will be working on this one until I am in glory.

I try not to use foul language (unfortunately, sometimes I do slip) for reasons that Evie stated. Our words are powerful - both good and bad / positive and negative. Plus, I am a respresentative of my Father, so I don't want to so anything that will tarnish my witness.

I would imagine that also applies to what comes out of your mouth.

I can not say I have never sworn. (I have been known to curse at the drivers around me :blush:). But I don't make a habit of it. It seems to me that curse words are unnecessary. They do not enhance what you say. They just sound really crude. I still am taken aback when I hear really young children swearing or taking God's name in vain. I never take God's name in vain. And I cringe when I hear other people. After all, it is one of the commandments.

I don't know how it goes biblically, but don't think Jesus was a Potty Mouth.

I'm not perfect in this, however I do repent when I slip, and try not to.

Interestingly, cursing use to be very abrasive/offensive to me, I want to get back to that feeling.

I suppose it is possible that what people consider a bad word has changed over the years. Hearing some of those words even on regular television now I think tells us that some words are perfectly OK now. The person I was talking to the other day used s*, not in any fit of anger or feeleing of frustration, just in general conversation. She told me that growing up, she would have had her mouth washed out for saying it, but now it is OK, although, she said she does not say it frequently. There is just nothing wrong in saying that word. Maybe I have an archaic view of language. I just have this picture in my mind of buying girl scout cookies 30 years from now and having the girl telling me that "The thin mints are really good ......."

I don't know if anyone can say that they have never sworn, what little bit I have said is very tame in comparison, but is it any better? Not to my Mom. She used to say "let your yea be yea and your nay be nay" (apparently from James 5.12)

A quick question if I may, alabaster, I assume SIL means "sister in law" but I have yet to figure out DD?

yes i have been known to use the fri... as... sh... but its when i get really mad, and i feel realy bad for this because we should try to be clean at all time by guarding our mouth,

I say to the younger kids who swear very second word which affends me this;

Swearing show's that you cannot express yourself properly and need to learn how too :D

Hmm, I used to swear A LOT. I don't know if it's like that all over the world, but Dutch people use horrible language (I've lived here for four years.. New Zealand was nothing compared to here!).
Everyone around me was using 'those' kind of words, so I automaticly started using them too. Every sentence there would be one of 'those' words... really really horrible.

Then I became a devout Christian and quit. Sometimes I might slip.. but I consider that as normal, seeing how much I used to swear. (Now it's down to one in every three weeks... halleluyah! :clap: )

People here have already given enough reasons why Christians shouldn't swear. We are here as messengers, representitives of the Highest God and His Son. If we respresent them so badly, how are we going to show people that Christianity is different? Jesus has made us into something more then slaves of this world, with it's foul language. We can't praise Him one moment and then curse our neighbour the next... as scripture tells us.
Christians shoudln't act like slaves, we should act as free people, in controle of our own tongues.
