B4 one asks if such and such denomination is a cult one has to know what the terms mean.
The American Heritage Dictionary defines cult as:

2: a system of religious beliefs and ritual; also : its body of adherents
3: a religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious; also : its body of adherents
4: a system for the cure of disease based on dogma set forth by its promulgator <health cults>
5 a: great devotion to a person, idea, object, movement, or work (as a film or book); especially : such devotion regarded as a literary or intellectual fad

From the above then we see that we need to know what is the difference between a cult and a sect in practical terms for religious groups. The difference lies in who will be saved. A sect recognizes that not all of God's children belong to their specific sect. A cult denies anyone other than members of their group the possibility of being saved. To date there is only one major Christian group that qualifies as a cult.
