Correct, since when is publicly exposing evil considered mocking? The term 'spectacle' doesn't imply it was done to mock, rather it implies it was done to make an impact, which it obviously did.

The fact that Jesus forgave sins before he was crucified and one of the reasons he was crucified was because he claimed to forgive sins, which they thought only God could do, not man, should hopefully put the OP to rest.

Indeed it does. You've established the nonsequitur. Jesus can forgive sins without needing to be crucified, so the crucifixion was unrelated to the forgiveness of sins.

So we slash the animal's throat, dab some blood on our fingers and flick it around. Then we take its guts out and put them on the altar and burn them, and we take the fatty parts of the animal and eat it later. I like how he just brushes over the "Yeah OK it's a little weird but seriously it's so, like, you know, symbolic or whatever." But hey, there's no debating taste, so... free pass I guess. But I'm still left wondering what this desecration of a corpse actually accomplishes in reality. Symbolism... great... but symbolism never *does* anything.

And they completely left that unaddressed, then transfer the symbolism over to the passion narrative and drop the mic, thinking "#nailed it".

As I said, you are not following through the terms set out in your OP, that's all. You are not allowing any theological claim, but challenging each to the level of apodicticity, which is unreasonable.

If you want to take the physical necessity route, then you need only establish some causal link - no different than what is done in science. Absolute certainty is not required or even expected here. Just explain the physical mechanics of what is occurring.

If you can do neither of these things, then there was no physical or logical necessity for Jesus to be crucified. What, then, was the point of his death?


The covenant is that God blesses us if we behave ourselves. Regardless of what we do, God can continue to bless us if he so desires. Nothing in there requires that God tortures and kills himself.


This notion from the Bible is taken out of context far too often by apologists.

Tell me, who is your neighbor? What does it mean to be one's neighbor? Can you beat and rape your neighbor? Certainly not, because even the Old Testament tells us to love our neighbor as we love ourselves.

But the Old Testament also allows for rape and slavery. The obvious answer is this:

Your neighbor is another Hebrew man of fatherhood age.

That's why you can't just go around beating and raping your neighbor. That's why you love your neighbor as yourself. But that's also why the systematic racism and sexism of the Old Testament was still "valid."

This is why there is indentured servitude for Hebrew men, but women and foreigners are slaves for life. This is why there is absolutely no law against rape, but rather laws against whom you rape - or, more accurately, whose wife/property you rape.

So, no, "Love your neighbor as yourself" doesn't cut it.


I don't think there is any system of absolute morality, but I can hypothetically grant you that such a system exists. Do we then agree that rape, slavery, genocide, and animal torture for the amusement of some deity would be in violation of this absolute morality?

Should we be surprised that when a group of racist, sexist, genocidal, slave-driving rapists cobble up some treatise on morality, they might get a few things wrong here or there?

You can't demonstrate anything in physical reality without assuming it constitutes reality and whole plethora of other assumptions. This is essentially a weak Petitio Principii. Anyway, much of Science was done in armchairs, just called 'Thought Experiments', such as much of relativity theory or quantum theory. ...What does it accomplish? I think I've already offered some explanation as to what Jesus' sacrifice (or those of the O.T.) accomplishes in previous posts here. So, if none of that is satisfactory, then I don't have much else to offer you, especially since, as I've explained in various threads, there are various epistemological and theological factors also involved. If you really want more specifics on the significance of sacrifice in the Bible, then you might read the book, Sacrifice in the Bible - Roger T. Beckwith and Martin J. Selman (eds.).

And no, I don't think those ol' Levites sat around just chewing the fat ...

I agree Jesus can forgive without being crucified, Scripture makes that clear, but I disagree that crucifixion and forgiveness of sins are unrelated, since one of the reasons he was crucified was because he claimed to have the authority to forgive sins.
