  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

(I am crossposting this to a few forums because I'm hoping to get some responses tonight before I have to sign off - hope that's okay)

I have recently become a Christian. I learned about Jesus through talking to other Christians online. The thing is... and I know this is going to sound pretty crazy but circumstances have brought me here... I do not have a Bible, and all the ones I see at Christian bookstores are too expensive for me. I can only read the Bible when I go to the library, or get online at a public computer (there are some public terminals in my city and also at the library of course). I have a lot of credit card debt and I really have a hard enough time eating well these days.

So my question is this... does anyone know where I can get a free Bible? I know that churches do that sort of thing but I don't really know yet what kind of church I want to go to (I've just been talking and praying with other Christians I know online so far) and I don't want to take something free from a church that is expecting me to show up again next week when I really might not. See my dilemma?

Any help would be great.

Hmm. Well what you could do is call some Churches in your area. Let them know that you are a new Christian and you don't have any money right now to purchase a Bible. I am sure you could find a Church who would be happy to help you with this. Also do you have any friends who are Christians, or perhaps maybe they know someone who is a Christian? I think most Christians have more than one Bible and would be glad to give one to a new Christian. I had three, but I gave one to a friend myself.

Also just wanted to say, welcome to the Body of Christ! Your now on the winning team!

Thanks for the reply, hiplove. I thought about calling churches in the area and I guess this might be what I have to do... but I also know some of them view all relations with outsiders as a transactional thing, give and take. I don't want to get their expectations up. Maybe I'm just splitting hairs though.

I do know plenty of people who probably have a Bible laying around, but who are not the kind of people I usually think of as Christians. I'm not saying they aren't, just that they don't seem to be outreaching. In my head I'm hoping to find someone who is overenthusiastic to give me a Bible ("which version would you like? oh here, take one of each").

I saw online (google search "free bible") there is a group that gives out copies of something called the Recovery Edition but they also seem just a little weird to me for some reason. Dunno.

And thanks for the warm welcome!

Not being sure of what part of the world you are in, I'm not really sure how much I can help you out. If you're in my neck of the woods, I'd give you one of mine, or buy you one. I'm in Johannesburg, SOuth Africa. More than I'm afraid I cannot offer. Trying to stay away from credit cards myself ;)
