(I am crossposting this to a few forums because I'm hoping to get some responses tonight before I have to sign off - hope that's okay)

I have recently become a Christian. I learned about Jesus through talking to other Christians online. The thing is... and I know this is going to sound pretty crazy but circumstances have brought me here... I do not have a Bible, and all the ones I see at Christian bookstores are too expensive for me. I can only read the Bible when I go to the library, or get online at a public computer (there are some public terminals in my city and also at the library of course). I have a lot of credit card debt and I really have a hard enough time eating well these days.

So my question is this... does anyone know where I can get a free Bible? I know that churches do that sort of thing but I don't really know yet what kind of church I want to go to (I've just been talking and praying with other Christians I know online so far) and I don't want to take something free from a church that is expecting me to show up again next week when I really might not. See my dilemma?

Any help would be great.

PM me your address and I will be sure you get a Bible. It will likely be NASB or NIV. it will a no strings attached Bible. You will not be expected to be anywhere next week and it will have no return address. But you will get a copy of the scriptures without fail.

Hi aba

there are sites on the web where you can get a free bible but it would help to know where you live. One of them does not send bibles to California.

That's cool, but I don't really need a second free one now that I've received one from a local church.

I find that very odd that whichever site you mention doesn't send Bibles to California. I wonder why that is? Do you remermber which site it is?

Found it. It is at the very bottom in tiny print. If I see that you are unable to go to the home page, I will copy that URL and send it too.

I think I know what's going on with that. California has the strictest consumer privacy laws in the USA. So if a business collects and shares and sells consumer data (your contact info, etc.) throughout the nation, then they have to either comply with California's laws, or not deal with California residents.

For instance, this company, USA Bibles, is run by a company called "Permission Data, LLC." That right there tells you what they're in the business of... their primary source of revenue is selling your contact info to other companies. The free Bible is just a hook.

http://www.usabibles2.com/ubprivacy.htm
From their privacy policy: "We will use your personal information to fulfill orders for products and services purchased by you from the Website. We may also use such information to directly market certain offers to you (via e-mail, direct mail and/or telemarketing), to monitor compliance with our Terms and Conditions and for content improvement and feedback purposes. We may sell the personal information that you supply to us and we may join together with other businesses to bring selected retail opportunities to our members. These businesses may include, but are not limited to: (a) providers of direct marketing services and applications, including lookup and reference, data enhancement, suppression and validation; (b) e-mail marketers; and (c) telemarketers."

See that "but are not limited to" bit? That's a blanket statement, so their contract with you is essentially that they can do anything at all with your info, within the bounds of the law (and that's a lot). But they've gone further, they've decided that they don't want to comply with California law because it's too protective of the consumer. Yipes! Big red flag here.

That's a bad sign. :(

But thank you, threeinone, for the links. :) Now we know one site not to recommend, at least IMHO.

It was just for your curiosity/information "sign". And I was curious too and I thank you for explaining. Not really a very nice way to give free bibles. They're using people.;)
