Counter Missionary vs. Messianic Brethren in Arad

Here's an e-mail note from an old friend I've known for about 35 years. Prayer for strength and wisdom for our MJ brethren and for LIGHT to come to our traditional brethren, please?

Shalom friends,

Here is a report from the leaders of the congregation in Arad, Israel, concerning the anti-Messianic demonstration there on Wednesday, March 9. Thanks for your prayers! It’s followed by an encouraging article that appeared in the Ashdod newspaper concerning an anti-Messianic demonstration last month.

Subject: First details - March 2011 demonstration

Hi every body,

Thank you for praying for us yesterday and thinking of us, we felt it.
We managed to gather these details, from a friend of ours that was on
the scene:

There were about 250 ultra-orthodox young "yeshiva" demonstrators
yesterday in front of Polly Sigulim's house, who was not there at the
time. The demonstration lasted about 2.5 hours. Opposite Polly's
house, in the garden of one of the neighbours, son to Holocaust
survivors, there was a demonstration of about 30-50 people, who came
to say they do not like what the ultra-orthodox are doing. They had
signs in our favour. One of them was supposed to be: "We are all
Messianic Jews", but we don't know if they finally put it up.

Our friend's impression was, that the demonstration was not aggressive
as he thought it would be, but it was very loud: 250 men singing "Am
Israel chai" ("the nation of Israel lives"), Rabbis giving speeches,
shouts and yells of "amen", to what the Rabbis were shouting, while
the Rabbis give a religious seal to their speeches by shouting "Adonai
Malach, Adonai molech, Adonai Yimloch Leolam Va-ed", whicih means "God
reigned, reigns and will reign for ever and ever", while the things
they said had no connection to the Lord or His character. Polly's
neighbour and his friends, were shouting too, and had football-game
horns, which added to the loudness of the whole occasion, using them
to disturb the Rabbi's speeches. Can you imagine this happening in
front of a private house, on a quiet street, in a peaceful
neighbourhood?...

At one point, there was a presentation on a screen, probably done by
the "Yad Le-Achim" anti-missionary group, showing the scene they like
to show with Eddie Beckford, and featuring faces and names of about 20
believers in Arad, like Polly, Avi Schwartz, Debbie and Yoyakim, and
others. The message was, that we are the enemies of the Jewish people.
A person we know, a former yeshiva guy whom later became a believer,
said that while he was in the Yeshiva, Yad Le-Achim came in and showed
a film about Messianic Jews, at the end of which the yeshiva guys
wanted to kill us... This is the whole purpose of these films. But it
was encouraging to hear that other people were interested in showing
that they disagree with this. One of the contra-protesters was the
principle of the first high school in Arad. He came out with a big
flag of Israel and shouted in anger at the Haredim that were there,
which of course got the immediate attention of the reporters there,
who rushed to him with their cameras. Others shouted "banu hosheh
legaresh", a known Israeli Hanukkah song, which says: "we've come to
drive-out the darkness"..

May it be - but the Lord will be the one that will drive out the
darkness, and we know that you are praying so with us.

During the time of the whole event, we held a prayer meeting pleading
to God for salvation and Holy Spirit move amongst all those involved.

The demonstration was covered by the Israeli TV. We can still pray for
the editing, it will probably go to the screens tonight.

Thank you very much,

Debbie and Yoyakim Figueras.

Kan HaDarom (March 4) printed a very interesting piece examining the reaction of the writer Shmulik Duek, a resident of Ashdod, to the comparison of Messianic Jews with Hitler made by the city's chief rabbi: "I read the report about the Orthodox demonstration against the Messianic Jews and was astonished,' wrote Duek in a statement he asked to be made public. ‘Since when does a person have the right to say to another person what or how to believe? When will the Orthodox understand that even those whose beliefs differ from theirs have a right to exist? I want to point out that this demonstration has given superb publicity to these Messianic Jews, since beforehand I had never heard or known anything about their existence in Ashdod. In contrast, we never stop seeing the Orthodox mission on every street corner and knocking on our doors - in most cases disturbing our afternoon rest - in order to distribute another flyer. I am amazed that the police let such a demonstration go ahead, because essentially it was a racist demonstration which had no foundation or right to be held. The Messianics didn't violate any law or do anything unlawful to anyone. The comparison the chief rabbi made between them and the Nazis is a very severe act which must be investigated within the framework of the law. It's a serious and intolerable injury that is liable to be translated into an extremist act by some fanatic. We live in a state which upholds the freedom of religion and observance, and a demonstration against believers such as these or others is illegal and dangerous - and may well come back to bite its instigators." I've been there when the demonstrations are going on. Loud and obnoxious to say the least. It does grate on one's spirit after a few minutes.
What gets me is that many of the "yeshiva boys" have been bussed in from all over Israel. Most don't live in Arad. They don't work, don't support Israel in the IDF, but collect public assistance and donations from sometimes unsuspecting people who think they are doing a mitzvot.
