I never did understand why people claim it's selfish to not have children. It's not like there's some kind of moral obligation to the community to have children, as though I'm harming someone if I choose not to have children.

The "only child" comment is interesting. If it was important to your parents to have grandchildren, they could have chosen to have 6 or 7 children instead of one, to increase the odds.
