We are running out of Christian Bookstores so I don't know how long I will be able to observe this as it sweeps through what is offered and sold from the bookstore. I don't think it means anything important but I am stunned with the amount of self-help books are directed at Christians. What do you think?

It is a worrying trend because it influences people to depend on their own ability and strength to deal with their persona issues instead of trusting the Holy Spirit within them.

I am quite disgusted with my local Christian bookstores. They have nothing at all of the leading Bible scholars like Crossan or Fink or Borg or Vermes or Spong.

Reading the Bible in isolation without any understanding of history or context is an almost sure fire way to get it dead wrong.

We have both, your typical Christian & Catholic book stores. Thing is they are both struggling.

Bookstores are struggling because of something that is making all stores and malls struggle and that is the internet

Being a rather traditional Christian, I tend to prefer the Catholic book store over the typical Christian one. Books I tend to buy used (practically new) cheap and receive them next day using my wife’s Amazon prime shipping over the Internet but at the Catholic bookstore I like to browse for incense, icons & such which requires a brick and mortar facility.

Self-help has been a thriving genre in the publishing industry for decades. Realistically, I suppose there's no reason why the Christian segment of the market should be overlooked when it comes to self-help.

Besides, Christians have problems just like anybody else. Reading books written by people who can assist them with their troubles with actual, practical advice and insights is clearly beneficial. It's great to say "Just read the Bible". But there are specific struggles people have which Sacred Scripture does not address directly.

Reading books about a Christian response to those struggles is probably a positive thing.

I think the idea of Christians bookstores will probably become a thing of the past. People in mass have turned to being online for most things. Any Bible teaching you might want you just type it in and watch it preached out in things similar to youtube videos.
