i wanted a few opinions on copied games do u think the Lord frowns upon it?
I don't think there's anything wrong with making a backup for yourself but copying a game you don't own is stealing. A lot of people try to justify doing it but in the end, it's plain old theft. I predict it won't be long before someone pops in and starts rationalizing why it's not wrong.

Suppose you spent weeks of your time writing a game and it was really cool. You start selling the game but don't sell as many copies as you would like because a lot of people are just downloading it off the net. How would that make you feel? Or suppose 25 people each take $1.00 out of your paycheck every week. That's ok, right? I mean, you make enough money already and you won't miss $1.00 out of your check.

well it is against the law.. im not 100% sure on personal backups though...
Personal backups are not stealing.
It would be a great idea to back your games up, if you have alot of people around your games.
I know alot of kids, and friends, that don't fully respect games. So they end up all scratched up. A back up there would be good.

But a back up, so you could link two games together, that would be stealing.Even if it is in the same house.
Some games are designed mostly for link up systems.
Windows XP, you can't use the same program for two computers.
It is the samething with games.

None of it is stealing. It's copyright infringment. And yes, that's what the law says.

As soon as we invent matter replicators, it will be the equivalent of a person going to someone's car and creating a replica and driving off in the replica.

If the companies have their way, even personal backups are illegal (it's better business for them after all to make you go buy another copy if your copy gets damaged and you don't have a backup). In fact, they already try to do it with all their copy protections. Get it? In fact, if you'll read their little license agreements, they'll usually say something about how you're not allowed to circumvent that protection (and using a program that allows you to bypass that protection and make a backup is technically circumventing the protection). They're depriving us of our Fair Use rights and we don't see them going to court for that. Oh no, but people will blindly listen to them and let the company rights trump *our* rights.

As someone who is trying to make a living selling writing, I guess I'd say it's probably immoral.

If someone creates something, he gets to set terms on its use. Don't like the terms? Don't use the thing.

It's not like we're talking about life or death things here; we're talking entertainment. Doing without is no great hardship.

Well, first of all, you need a burner that is capable of it, usually writing RAW modes. Then I suggest getting Alcohol 120%. After that, it should be straightforward, as long as you know what protection each game uses.

thanks for all your input i started this thread and i believe that if my soul convicts me or especially the word of God i am in the worng ,BUT in this matter it doesnt i dont make that much money and for me to spend 5 dollars on renting a geam when i could make a game for 1 dollar for my self just seems smarter. Our laws and created to protect the business not the consumer so if they jack prices up to like 70 a game i probably wouldnt want to buy a game that imma beat in 3 days . So I believe that the Lord said THO SHALT NOT STEAL , but in all reality who is stealing from who. We the little guys (the consumers and developers) stealing or the big guys (the publishers ) think it over let me know what u think

So much for obeying the law. Seriously, if you feel no conviction for breaking a law and taking someone's intellectual property without paying, then who are we to tell you not to do it? I can't afford a new car so what's wrong with me taking one? It's not like GM is going to go broke or anything over ONE car. Or say I DO have a matter replicator and copy a car I like. Enough people start doing that and soon the car manufacturers are not making enough money to design and build new cars just so everyone can replicate them for free. But that's ok, my old Mazda (UT 2004) runs fine so what do I need with a new car (game)?

I know, I know, it's not stealing because it's nothing but 1's and 0's. But someone spent a lot of time arranging those 1's and 0's in a specific order to make something that we enjoy and what do we tell them when we take and play what they worked on and give them no compensation? Gee, I hope Id goes out of business so there won't be a Doom 4.

I know a guy who downloads and burns every new game and movie that comes out and NEVER buys a new game unless it's an mmorpg that you have to buy to play. The school district I used to work for had 9 licenses for MS Office but had it installed on over 2,000 machines. Yeah, I know it's Micro$oft and if anybody deserves to get stiffed, it's them but what if it was YOUR fledgling company that had written a great office suite?

Ok, didn't mean for this to turn into a rant but since it's written, I'll let it go just to see the flames.

Here's a brilliant idea. Maybe if the companies didn't charge such a high price for their products, people would be more willing to buy it. You see, nothing is ever completely free, even pirated goods. They're generally of *a lot* cheaper, but there are still costs involved, whether its the broadband connection and CD used to download and burn, or whether it's coming up with the matter for your matter replicator. Oh, and they tend to be of inferior quality too (whether it be the packaging, or whatever)

Do you have any idea how much MS Office for 2000 machines would cost? Like the other guy said, in a way, it's a matter of two parties "stealing" from each other. How would you feel if it was your company forced to cough up $300,000 to $600,000 for overpriced MS Office licenses?
