As soon as I heard about this game, I looked up all i could on it. The game is made by the same guy who made sim city and The Sims. Customization is the key in this game. The developers took a different approach by not creating the characters entirely, but allowing you to create them as you see fit. Using mathamatic equations, the creature you design moves like how it would in real life. You start with single celled organisms and work your way up the food chain by evolving.
You eventually create intelligent beings who eventually get to the stage where they can colonize (or conquer) other planets. sadly, the game wont be available for quite some time, but i figure i would give you guys a heads up. it looks very interesting, and I know i have asked myself how i would make creatures look if i could design them, and it looks like this game can give me that experience.
