The way I understand this is that if one believes God gave a more effective power to the Apostles and those who were with them, than He gives to believers today, then that one is considered to be a cessationist, although not the "Hard Line" type who says ALL the Gifts of the Spirit have ceased.

Maybe the label should be a "partial cessationist"

I consider myself to be a continuationist, because I don't see any scripture to support different qualities of Gifts of the Spirit given to individuals.

I believe the difference lies in one's ability to receive from God.

i guess i`m a continuationist, i believe the gift of the holy spirit was given to all present. even to day the gift of the holy spirit is for all to recieve, most shun the spirit and others without proper teaching don`t get full use of the gift. i think the same happen in those days also. my family attended a church for many years that taught against the gifts of the holy spirit this was pounded into us most church service when they wern`t preaching money. there has allways been non belivers.

The way I understand it is that cessationists believe that the gifts of the Spirit stopped at the end of the New Testament times. I'm not the most studied person, but I figure if people pick and choose which gifts they feel have continued they would be partial cessationists. I personally feel like all of the gifts are still available to believers. I haven't seen any scripture to suggest otherwise. Some of the gifts aren't seen as often as others, but its dependant upon what the church needs at the time.

I could be way off, as I said I'm not the most studied person, just beginning my studies to be a minister actually. If I am, please correct me so I can learn from my errors.

LOL. It's a moot point if you already do have the baptism of the Holy Spirit and speak in tongues. I just met a lady, we both live in the same senior housing building, who was saved at a Billy Graham crusade 40 years ago. A couple of years later, when she was at the end of her rope over a situation, she asked God to do something, and she began to speak in tongues. She didn't know what it was till someone told her.

Knowing her has just set my faith on fire. She's such a blessing. We pray for each other's aches and fears. Her language is beautiful.

So, can't argue with something like that. When two old charismatic ladies get together, look out!

I think you're right on, always compare what you hear from men to what the Holy Spirit teaches you from the bible.

May the Lord soak your mind with His truth.

Well I grew up in a church enviroment where tongues etc were thought top be a thing of the past, but I couldn't get where they were coming from even as a teenager.

There are two verses that are used to justify cessationism, 1 Cor 13:10
"When the perfect comes, the partial will be done away."
and 2 Cor 12:12
"The signs of a true apostle were done among you with all perserverance by signs and wonders and miracles."

Based on these, seminarys all over the world teach the doctrine of cessationism.

Another important point to consider. The holy Spirit give gifts so that more people can be reached with the gospel. If you reaqd over ACTS 1 you will realize that because there were many different jews of many languages the disciples were given the girt of tongues. How many other times did the disciples speak in tongues. Not many. Because they didnt need to. And also we should focus on the frutis of the spirit as well and not only the gifts

How about all, fruit and gifts, they're all from the Father.

And to this day, the gift of tongues is being seen.

There probably isn't a cessationist alive who doesn't believe that God had told him something. So, it really isn't about whether God speaks today, but how. And it usually boils down to tongues. But the Bible says not to forbid speaking in tongues. Thank God that got in there!

Try this link, about Baptists speaking in tongues. Scroll down to wed. Dec. 12th. And wait about 5 minutes for the end of Rexella and the station break. It's long, but worth it, even on dialup.

Drat. They only keep them up for about 30 days. I just listened to in again last night. I hope they fix it, but who knows.... It was really good. Research some of the men who were on that show and you will get something I'm sure. Especially McKissic. But they all told how they recieved the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and how they began speaking in tongues. It was different for each of them, yet the same result. I was a special blessing to hear Arthur Blessitt tell his testimony.

McKissic went into the history of the Pentecostal movement. He mentioned a place I hadn't heard of, called Sandy Creek revival. And they all gave chapter and verse, and spoke directly to any Baptist pastors watching about how the whole tongues thing is in the Bible, and can't be dismissed unless it is studied improperly.

I don't think anything has ceased. It's all there still, but I do think we have periods of hardened hearts, but you can find it in operation in various places all over the world. When you look at what's happening over in Africa..people being raised from the dead and everything. You have to wonder what's different about it. People over there are convienced that there is the spiritual side of life, wheather good or not so good. They truely believe in these things.

They also use the one about the Apostles and Prophets being the "foundation" (Eph. 2:20). They like to say that the "foundation" was laid in the First Century, and now that the canon of Scripture is complete, we no longer need those gifts.
