• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Do any of you find dealing with a mental illness in church culture to make a difference between a liberal or conservative church? I myself don't seem to fit into either, but I do feel more love and understanding at the liberal churches. Any thoughts?

Well I've honestly never been to a "liberal" church as far as I know. I've been raised in conservative churches. So I can't really speak to whether or not one tends to be more loving than the other. I do know, however, that churches in general will differ in the way they view the world and treat other people. It really just depends on the people who happen to attend the particular church.

the title and question aren't really that good..... I think maybe I just wonder if some churches are a little more caring than others. Or people of course are. But is there some rhyme or reason some people are? I don't know what I had in mind. I just sometimes feel like some churches are evil....

My OCD was at its worst when I attended the Church of Christ, which is an extraordinarily conservative church. I do think that plays into it.

This is also a reason discussing religious OCD on these forums is difficult. For those who are going through scrupulosity, trying to explain the difference between a thought and a perceived sin can get frustrating for both the sufferer and the person trying to help. OCD deals with unwanted thoughts, but if you attend a church where thoughts themselves are sinful, the OCD sufferer can go through a period of self-loathing for not being able to stop something they don't want to do. If that makes sense.

I speak just from my experience, which includes being the sufferer and trying to help others cope with their OCD, now that I've learned more about the condition.
