How does the United Methodist denom handle Matthew 18 disputes/charges? I know level 1 is just between the individuals but at level 3 the congregation is involved.

I would like to know how that is handled. Thanks.

Matt 18.15 “If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother.
16 But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed.
17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.

The church only intervenes at the request of one or both of the parties or if the dispute is impacting the church at large. This is how every Wesleyan family church I have ever been a part of deals with it. Now, the pastor and parishioners may approach the parties and offer personal advice and encouragement, but as far as I can tell the corporate body stays out unless it's necessary or requested.

I find the concept of church discipline a fascinating source of discussion, but haven't heard much about it for the Methodist church. I'll keep an eye on this thread. No personal experience myself on it.

In the United Methodist Church we minister under a "Discipline." The Book of Discipline of the UMC tells all United Methodists how we are to conduct our life and ministry in the Church. If someone in the UMC violates the provisions of the Discipline there can be consequences all depending on if the person is clergy or laity and what the offense might be.

Unfortunately "Discipline" has taken on the connotation among some Christians of punishment. United Methodists believe in always living a Disciplined life because we are Christ's disciples.
