• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hi,
I am new to this so hello all.

I am a bit confused - i used to self harm for 13 years and stopped 3 1/2 years ago. But recently, despite being the happiest I have ever been and seriously very happy, i have been thinking more and more about harming again to the point where it is getting harder and harder to resist!

Any help greatly appreciated!!!

aw. that sucks.
but congradulations on making it so long!

For me, sometimes. When things change (even in your case, for the better) I wanna cut because its what i know, its 'safe'. (if you have a clue what I'm talkin about )

Anyway, use the same ways as you did trying to stop when you want to cut now, like talking to someone.

I know you can do this.
You've done so so well, its awesome you've made this far.
Hang in & i'm here if you need me.

I agree with Ally - congratulations on doing so well for so long now.

When I tend to struggle with the thoughts of self-harm, I'm usually feeling more stressed and need to focus on what I can do to get into a more stable place emotionally.

I'd suggest getting back to basics on how you've learned to do so well for so long - and talk with someone about what's going on that you're thinking about doing this again.

I hope you'll continue to post as needed to get support here, but will also contact your support offline.

I am so so cross with myself - i am sure you can guess why - was only a little bit - i don't want to start again from day 1!!!! Do you think it is ok to say I have stopped for 3 1/2 years with a slight blip????? I was so so proud of myself! I don't understand! Everything seems so good at the moment - i don't know why i have done it!

Thanks for the support everyone xxxxx

notnownotlistening,
nice to meet you. I too struggle with self harm. yes i think it is okay to say 3.5 years with a blip. No matter what happens no one can take that 3.5 years away from you. And it is a great job you did to make it that far. My longest has been about 1 year.

My question and thought to give to you is try to figure out if at all possible what might have triggered you, if anything. For me, i am bipolar so sometimes it is just a mood swing that needs a doctor's attention, at other times someone did or said something that triggered an old thought pattern.

We are here for you!
