• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was listening to the radio this morning and had a mini revelation. They were talking about Peter when he was confronted by Jesus and asked "Do you love me?". The program was one of the protestant offering here in the morning. Oddly enough they were using this in some convaluted way to make the point of "Eternal Security".

But as I listened it came to me that this story in the Bible points out our need for Confession. Peter who denied Christ three times was asked three times if he loved Christ. He was not asked just once to cover all the offenses. He had to confess his love for Christ three separate times. I am sure Peter was painfully aware of what Christ was asking him to do.

The Catholic Church teaches us to confess our sins as individually as we possibly can. We don't just go to Confession and say "I sinned God please forgive me". We must be specific.

We are also asked to make an act of contrition. In that act of contrition we are to ask forgiveness not because we fear Hell, but because we have hurt the one we should love above all things, God. To me this is exactly what Christ was asking Peter to do. This was the first Confession. Christ being thekind and merciful confessor, help Peter make his first confession, just as a good priest shoud do.

Finally, we all should know that when we go to Confession we are not confessing them to the priest but we are confessing them to Christ. The priest is Christ's Vicar in this situation. We are confessing to Christ, just as Peter did.

Thank God for this wonderful Sacrament!

:amen:

And thank about God, in the Garden of Eden. Look at Genesis 3:8-13 (D-R):
And when they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in paradise at the afternoon air, Adam and his wife hid themselves from the face of the Lord God, amidst the trees of paradise.

And the Lord God called Adam, and said to him: Where art thou?

And he said: I heard thy voice in paradise; and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.
spacer.gif
And he said to him: And who hath told thee that thou wast naked, but that thou hast eaten of the tree whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldst not eat?
spacer.gif

And Adam said: The woman, whom thou gavest me to be my companion, gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
spacer.gif
And the Lord God said to the woman: Why hast thou done this? And she answered: The serpent deceived me, and I did eat.

Three times God asks Adam and Eve. God knew the answer to all three questions... what did God want Adam and Eve to do?

Make a confession. What a different world we might be living in, if they would have came to God, said they were sorry and fessed up...

Yes. Peter was given penance for his sin and the penance symbolizes perfect contrition, “Do you love me?” The reason and motivation for our repentance, out of love of God and fear of offending Him, not out of a fear of hell.

I think this seen in John’s gospel is where Peter was taught that “Love covers a multitude of sin” And we see, this in scripture, the teaching of Jesus given to the apostles that the apostles in turn teaches us. So I guess this can be “proof” of oral tradition in scripture, Jesus teaching the apostles and they then teaching it to us.

The better we understand the teachings of the Church, the better we understand scripture. It isn’t the other way around, that the better we understand scripture, the better we understand what Christ taught.

As we can se when you do that, look to the scriptures alone to se what Christ taught, you are just lost and conclude so many erroneous things that Christ really did not teach.

The Catholic Church unlocks the mystery that surrounds scripture.
