Hey all,

was wondering if someone could answer a couple of quick questions. The last time I attended a ELCA service was several years ago. I remember in the LBW that there was three settings for Holy Communion.

1. What are the differences between the three;

2. Does the ELCA still use the Green LBW?

thanks in advance and God Bless!

I am familiar with the services, some Congregations in Lutheran Church Canada ordered the books back when it was a "joint" project between the ELCA, and LCMS, and were therefore committed to using it.

Our new Lutheran Service book (LCMS and LCC) has 5 different settings of the Divine Service (Mass). Most are slightly revised from all the previous Lutheran services. Formats of each vary, canticles differ, but the purpose of each is the same. The reverent glorification of God, and the celebration of the Gospel of our Lord through his sacraments. The differences allow for variety and freshness while maintaining Biblical integrity, doctrine, and honor the traditions of the Christ's Church on earth.

As pointed out, the ELCA has recently published a new "cranberry" worship book titled "Evangelical Lutheran Worship" (ELW) It has 10 settings for Holy Communion.

To answer your two questions.

1. The difference in the settings is the music. The parts of the service and, for the most part, even the words used, are the same in all of the settings.

2. Some congregations are still using the green "Lutheran Book of Worship." Others have switched to the ELW.

The green LBW was a joint project between the LCMS, ALC, and LCA. A handful of LCMS congregations purchased it, but the LCMS in convention rejected the LBW. It was then "updated" into the blue Lutheran Worship (LW). Neither one of them were very good. The new LSB is a far cry from either LW or LBW.

In LCMC, the LBW is on its way out the door as well. Many of the congregations I know of in LCMC are switching to the "ReClaim" hymnal.
Reclaim Hymnal? What's that? Do you have a link to an explanation or content of it?

The ReClaim hymnal grew out of the WordAlone movement in the ELCA. Gracia Grindal is one of the big names involved in the project. Its Communion setting is (unless I'm badly mistaken) an updating of the old Common Service that old farts like me remember fondly.
