  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

For those who do not know what The Hutterites is: An Anabaptist (Mennonite) group, developed a self-sufficient communal society wherein they shared all things in common (or, as they themselves prefer to call it, Gütergemeinschaft, which means community of goods).

In my own conviction, there is no biblical precedent for a permanent communal living situation. However, we should live with open homes, open hospitality, and open proximity.

However, I am reminded that Amish is more of a culture than communal society even though they are living as a communal society.

I hope to become a voluntary simplicitist. I wouldn't mind communal living and the idea is very appealing. On a related note, there is site I visit often called Lehamns. They sell to a lot of Amish where they are and sell Amish products.

Lehman's is a popular store, not only for the plainer folks but for the "simplicity" and "back to nature" folks.

So what's a voluntary simplicitist?

Do you think more along the lines of a community or just goin' it alone (yourself/family)?
I never really considered it in a community sense but I would not be opposed at all. My only concern is would I be expexted to conform to any ideaologies associeted with the group. For example, if it's a religious group.

Geographically in differant places but 'meet' to share time of prayer 'online' or if possible with another living the same simple life.
Occasionally it is possible to meet as a group.

Its a community but over a very wide geographical distance.

I live in a country were 93% of people do NOT go to never mind belong to a church of any sort.

I have had some experience with communal living. It was not a religious experience. It led me to a spiritual awakening. I think it can work well, if people have the same values and goals.

My husband and I live much more simply than most of our families. We buy necessities mostly. We strive to be homesteaders, thats what we call it anyways. We farm....its a small farm, but we can from our garden. We can enough to get us to next spring... We raise chickens and hogs... We heat our house by a wood stove. We like to be as primative as we can and we find it very satisfying.

Communal living is very hard if everyone is not in harmony. BELIEVE ME. If you are not strong in your faith, or if you live with people who are not strong in faith, then forget it. You will get hurt somehow.

It frightens me, to be honest. What if the people turn to be bad (like a cult) and have to go and you lose everything?
Well, if you chose to live in this lifestyle, and you realize that its not for you (or that it's a cult), then you GET OUT..... and if you lose everything, oh well. Its just stuff. I lost alot of possessions when I left the commune I was living in. But, it was just stuff. Stuff can be replaced. You wont lose anything you really need. I was just glad to be out of there... if its a truelly bad situation, the stuff wont matter.

Also, i forgot to mention....part of the whole "communal experience" is the fact that material possessions don't matter. You get what you need from God and share it with everyone.

I lived for almost two years in the Bruderhof Communities, whehn they were still part of the Hutterites.

It is a very practical lifestyle in regards to complying with the commands and teachings of Chris. The description of "Brotherly Community" as "The Highest Command of Love" by an early Hutterite leader really sums it up. I believe if we are on the path Christ blazed for us then like the Christian in Jerusalem after they were filled with the Holy Spirit, we would be drawn together in a way that makes Community possible and desirable.
