I hope to become a voluntary simplicitist. I wouldn't mind communal living and the idea is very appealing. On a related note, there is site I visit often called Lehamns. They sell to a lot of Amish where they are and sell Amish products.

Choosing to live a simplier lifestyle, reducing consummerism and dependence on technology. I hope to live without electricity completly someday. But I have to admit, I would sure miss The Waltons reruns! LOL! Here is a link.Lehman's is a popular store, not only for the plainer folks but for the "simplicity" and "back to nature" folks.
So what's a voluntary simplicitist?
I never really considered it in a community sense but I would not be opposed at all. My only concern is would I be expexted to conform to any ideaologies associeted with the group. For example, if it's a religious group.Do you think more along the lines of a community or just goin' it alone (yourself/family)?
What does that entail?I live as part of a 'dispersed' community.
I have had some experience with communal living. It was not a religious experience. It led me to a spiritual awakening. I think it can work well, if people have the same values and goals.
My husband and I live much more simply than most of our families. We buy necessities mostly. We strive to be homesteaders, thats what we call it anyways. We farm....its a small farm, but we can from our garden. We can enough to get us to next spring... We raise chickens and hogs... We heat our house by a wood stove. We like to be as primative as we can and we find it very satisfying.
Communal living is very hard if everyone is not in harmony. BELIEVE ME. If you are not strong in your faith, or if you live with people who are not strong in faith, then forget it. You will get hurt somehow.
Well, if you chose to live in this lifestyle, and you realize that its not for you (or that it's a cult), then you GET OUT..... and if you lose everything, oh well. Its just stuff. I lost alot of possessions when I left the commune I was living in. But, it was just stuff. Stuff can be replaced. You wont lose anything you really need. I was just glad to be out of there... if its a truelly bad situation, the stuff wont matter. It frightens me, to be honest. What if the people turn to be bad (like a cult) and have to go and you lose everything?
Also, i forgot to mention....part of the whole "communal experience" is the fact that material possessions don't matter. You get what you need from God and share it with everyone.Well, if you chose to live in this lifestyle, and you realize that its not for you (or that it's a cult), then you GET OUT..... and if you lose everything, oh well.
