I started to watch this new show on PBS expecting great things. The whole thing was to take modern families and place them in 1628 and have them create a successful colony. It was interesting and all, but there is one problem with it. The anti-christian slant that it has been edited to. There is only negitive metion of the religious aspects of colonial life. When they speak of christianity it is only for the harsh punishments not the comunity building or anything good. There is many historically incorrect parts of it. Compared to there other shows like this one, I would have to say this is one of the most poorly done.

I agree! I watched part of one episode and switched it off. Those people chose to be on that show, signed paperwork saying they would abide by colonial laws (including mandatory church) and then flagrantly disobey them. I can see slipping up and swearing or forgetting to cover your head, just about all of us would probably do that at least once, but the people who skipped church because they are atheist basically ruined the whole program. News flash: In 1628 there was no such thing as your precious seperation of church and state. Not in America, not in England, not anywhere. There was also no such thing as womens' liberation, equal rights, or acceptance of "alternative lifestyles." Those people took 1628 and tried to impose 21st Century American morality (or lack thereof) and the Constitution of a country that didn't even exist yet on it.

Why did they participate in that program? I wouldn't sign on for a show called "Pagan House" or "Soviet House" unless I was specifically trying to ruin it. Then again, maybe that's what they were doing.

I was meaning to catch this show, but never did. From what I hear, it isnt that great. I enjoyed the show "frontier house" Which had 3 modern families go back to frontier times.

Yeah that is on of my favorites. I also liked Manor House. These type of reality shows I can stand.

I wish they would do a 1950s house..that would be neat...I'd even volunteer for it :) Although I realize as a woman I would have some difficulties.

Yah I agree definitely a anti-Christian slant on this show. but what show doesn't have that? Even Seventh Heaven has some anti-Christian stuff...at least evangelical Christian. I think it was really inappropriate for them to force the pastor to be the governor. I think they did it on purpose so that they could make him look like a religious zealot. If he were really that bad I think he would have punished that one guy for "coming out" but he didn't.

This show has showed me one thing: Our society today is made up of a bunch of spoiled brats who want things to go their way. It's all about MEMEMEMEMEME....thinking of others and that some things we do just MIGHT be wrong is never considered. To think there actually might be a difference between right and wrong!!! Atheists better be glad they've got a choice. When will people like the ones on this show going to appreciate something they've been blessed with? Seems like never.

Sorry about my rant but those are the thoughts this show has brought out from me.

I would agree to some extent. I think they should have enforced the rules. The Sabbath breakers should have been fined the first time, imprisioned the second and ecommunicated and/or executed the 3rd. They blamespemers should have had their tongues run through with an awl for the 1st offense, cut off for the second. They really should have enfored the law of the time period. Then the show would not have been so anti-christian.

Well maybe these people should be subjected to the punishments of that era, they should be tortured until they at least give lip service to Christianity.

Now that would really build a community.

I watched them all and thought that the christain aspect of it wasn't enforced enough. It was hisotorical inaccurate b/c the atheist woman that wouldnt go to church would have been put in the stocks at the least. other than that I thought it was a neat show but I definately enjoyed the frontier one better

While this certianly wasn't as good as 1900 House, 1940's House, Manor House or Frontier House, I think was interesting to note that the first three were English, the last, Canadian. While here in Canada we do watch American tv and the reality craze, it appeared that they were more open to actually experience real pioneer life. I think culturally, perhaps, the people on the first 4 shows were more open to new, authentic experiences.

Colonial House was also had the largest cross-section of people. It was harder to enforce the rules, and a less restrictive atmosphere.

However, I must praise Colonial House for one thing: They directly spoke about the injustices done to the First Nations people. I think was a good eye-opener, and needed to be included in the show.
