  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

band is a sport if anything is.Maybe you never seen a show band (predominantly african-american). Have you ever watched the band train? We do the running, the push ups, the sit ups, the crunches, the lunges, the stretches, the jumpin' jacks, the sprints, the laps around the football field.the full nine yards. And that's warm up. Then we learn a ten minute field show (if you're not in good shape, you'll never make it to the end). We learn music, drills, and a 2 min. dance (have you ever tried to dance and play as loud as you can at the same time? It takes skills). At my school the band spends more time on the football field than the football TEAM. we spend an average of 20-40 hours practicing. So whoever decided that you need to toss, kick, or block a ball to be an athlete is sadly mistake. We earn our scholarships just like every body else.

what sports? And no, band is not a sport, neither is cheerleading. I will say that it takes skill to play any instrument, but as far as a sport...gonna have to say nah...
the friends I hang out with play soccer, softball, hockey, baseball, rugby, etc...

I played softball and soccer :) but not anymore unfortunately.

Like I said before. I used to do orchestra and show choirs so I know how much skill it takes to do stuff like that. However... I really don't think that either of those are sports, even though we worked on routines and all, so... Band... takes talent, some work, but ultimately a sport...nooooooooooo

I play soccer at a jr college in Mississippi. ...

soccer... i think it should be taught in a classroom prior or while playing. I highly doubt that a lot of people understand the game. Unlike football, soccer practices are not structured with multiple coaches. Most coaches do not teach or know how to teach various scenarios around the field and how the players should react. Most of what is taught is shooting and passing and heading and basic moves everyone should know how to do. ah.

hehe.

I did Rowing my Freshman year and boy was it a major step up from high school sports, especially when we started the 2 practices a day! I absolutely loved the intensity and the team. However, during high school I was used to volleyball, softball, and basketball (I guess "skill" sports), so mentally I couldn't stand the repetitiveness of the rowing machine early in the morning, which is why I'm not still on the team. Had I been blessed with height I would have loved to have played Div. I vball. Anyways, now I mostly just stick with lifting and intramurals...and the occassional 5K. :)

orchestra and show choirs don't have a thing on showstyle marching band. Someone needs to enroll you in a band camp, son. At the end of the week you won't feel like you weren't athletic.

I play golf. Yeah, Yeah, could fall under the sport/no sport category for some of you, but try strapping 20 lbs to your back and walking 5 miles every day, on top of running 2 or more and weight training. Golf is also more of a mental game than any other sport. Don't believe me? Hit the links in a college tournament and see how well you do...we're not average or weekend golfers. My dorm houses basketball, softball, volleyball, golf, and tennis...the baseball guys have their own dorm :-(

Band camp??? Riiiiiight, of course that would be a heck of a lot worse than two or three a days to play lacrosse. I'm sure you have it rough running around four miles worth of sprints all the while some 6'4 gorrilla is taking a swing at you with a trombone. Band.... still not a sport...

MarLoc - what school do you go to?

Golf - no arguments there, definitely a sport.

I'm going to try out for my college's rowing team when it starts up in Sept. but until them, I'll just be doing sports on my own. I am hoping to give surfing a try this summer and wanted to try snowboarding this winter, but so far all the locals mountains have next to no snow, and I've just been too busy. There's snow in the forecast this upcoming weekend, so maybe then I'll pull out my board, get the bindings fixed and head up :)
