  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hello,

Collecting items was quite a big hobby of mine in the past. However, over the past year or so I have sank into quite a deep depression and as such lost interest in almost everything I once enjoyed. Hobbies are often cited as one of the best ways to overcome depression so I would like to find one or more again.

One thing that now appeals to me is the collecting of Bibles. However, there are so many lost, hurting, and unfortunate in the world that would greatly benefit from receiving the Word. On account of this, do you believe collecting Bibles is appropriate? Also, what about the hobby of collecting in general? Is it an appropriate hobby for a Christian or too carnal and materialistic? Opinions please?

Thanks much,
Kelly Marchewa

Bless yer heart....."collecting" in and of itself, is not a sin or anything that should trigger "false guilt"....."collecting" doesn't mean "worshiping" unless it is on that kind of level.....and at that point it is not a blessing but more like a "curse" for it "replaces" thoughts of God, etc.

Collecting Bibles is not evil or a sin. PRAY to God about this, dear heart, and He will guide you to a balance that is a blessing to you as well as to ev'ry body else.

Dedicate all that you do to God, including the collecting of Bibles, and He will take it from there.

((((hug))))

*You could collect Bibles and then disturb them to people who need them in your area... or give them to a charity that collects them and sends them to Christians who don't have a Bible.

On account of this, do you believe collecting Bibles is appropriate?

*Not unless you make an idol of it.

Also, what about the hobby of collecting in general? Is it an appropriate hobby for a Christian or too carnal and materialistic? Opinions please?

*Like I said previously, as long as you don't make it an idol... remember to keep this in check.

I collect certain Bibles(I like the really old Bibles), figurines, fine crystal, books
from long ago etc.
My collecting isn't about storing it all up for me, I've given away things I have
collected to family, friends and associates.
